Hey all...I just placed my order on the 2011 black & white Deluxe. I am active duty US Air Force for almost 16 years and currently stationed in Japan. I have been riding bikes all of my life starting at the ripe old age of six. I currently own a Triumph Bonnie and brought it with me here to Japan. Thanks to the ridiculous laws of the Japanese government, I would have to pay about $3,000 to put this bike on the road. Dumping that kind of money into another government did not set well with me at all and even though I love my Trumpet, I just can't pay that in good faith. So I decided to house a V-twin next to my P-twin and have the best of both worlds.
I didn't plan on getting a cruiser until I returned to America but oh well...I would rather have my money goes towards this Deluxe versus into the government's pocket. I am having kind of a surreal moment right now as I always wanted a Harley but this poor Irish kid from NY never thought that he would have something nice like this. I thought long and hard before doing this; I was eye-balling the Triumph T-bird for awhile and really liked how it handled. This might sound odd but the deciding factor with me came down to how HD supports me just because I wear the uniform. I don't even know how many of my deployments I have been on and I have seen a HD booth in the heat of the sand offering deals to us. This also includes the HD shop I just came from right on the base to drop this order. HD supports POW/MIA, Fisher House and a whole slew of other organizations that I can't even list right now. Kind of hard to ignore that kind of integrity even when sales have been down for them for the last couple of years. They could of easily justified stop supporting us but they didn't...it means something to me so now they have my business.
I can't wait to throw a leg over this Deluxe! The retro look of this cruiser is what did me in (go figure...I own a Bonnie!). I like the old school look and this Deluxe just drips with that kind of style in my opinion. So this is my 'hello' and I'm looking forward combing through this forum as I wait for this gorgeous cruiser to get put into my shed. Thanks for having me.
What is our Govt gonna tap you with when you bring that bike home?
Nothing. That is one of the ways HD offers a service to us military folk. HD has an arrangement with Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) to where they sell American spec'd bikes with American titles to us right on the base. We have to provide a copy of our orders showing that we are authorized to be in the specific country and qualify to be a customer. If you have that then you are good to go. HD has this types of service on our bases all around the world. I had to pay I believe a $850 shipping charge to have the bike sent to Japan. This is one of the many reasons why I felt HD deserves my business because of what they offer to us.
When I leave Japan to come back to America, I will be authorized to ship one bike in my household goods. I will have the Deluxe shipped because of the weight factor seeing it weighs almost double than what my Bonnie weighs. I will have to go private to get my Triumph back home but both these bikes are keepers for me and I will eat the grand to get the Trumpet back to the states.
