Had same situation, but with a bee. Bugger got under my FF helmet & stung lower lip. Had a nice Angeline Jolie look go'n for a few days - glad I wasn't allergic. You were lucky b/c, unlike bees, wasps/hornets can sting multiple times.
Ive never had it happen with my FF (which I rarely wear) but over the years its happened to me lots of times on my open faced helmet. Even once on the Motorway (Interstate) at 70mph. Usually the wasp or bee has just flown around between the visor and my face or landed on the inside of the visor, but they have crawled around on my face sometimes.
Its certainly very distracting to say the least. But unless the creature feels threatened it has no reason to sting so try to stay calm and concentrate on not having an accident and slow down to a stop if you can do so safely.
Having said that, even after had it happen loads of times the immediate internal reaction tends to be panic its gong to sting me fgs. But as long as you can control that panic feeling and ride safely to a stop your more likely to be ok than not.
Never had one crawl in my ear than goodness ewww that would be creepy.
Just happened to my wife a month ago....but with a bee.
She was wearing an open face helmet with a shield...the shield was open just a notch to let some extra air in...was stung and reached for where she was stung...actually caught the bee and said it felt like a blueberry...then pulled out the stinger. Not fun.
