Thank you once again to all who chimed in. My wife is really the one who got me started on a Harley - Davidsons. I have been missing this too long. My wife has a 2011 Sportster 883 Super Low in cool blue. It's a really nice bike. The main reason why she chose H-D bikes was because she wanted a motorcycle that was built for people of all sizes. My wife is only 5 feet tall, and she is just about flat footed on her bike. Of course we replaced the seat with the super reduced reach seat. She also liked the fact that she was treated very well at the dealership. I have owned several sport bikes and it seems when ever we go to the Kawi dealer, no one pays attention to my wife. At the Harley dealers, she is always acknowledge and treated very well. Also, my wife likes to personalize her stuff and the Harley-Davidson dealers always have lots of cool stuff for her bike.
Hi All. I just picked up a new 2012 Dyna Wide Glide in vivid black. This is my first H-D. I got the idea from my wife who bought her first bike just last year a 2011 Sportster Super Low in cool blue. While she was buying her new toy I kept looking at the Wide glides. Everytime we went to the dealer for something, I found myself looking at the Dyna Wide. Well, after seeing how different the H-D customer experience was, I decided I wanted one too. H-D dealers seem to treat customers very well. Every dealer we visited, we were treated very well. One big reason why my wife likes Harleys was simply because H-D caters to women very well. I have always bought sportbikes. I have owned 7 Kawi Ninjas. I still have my ZX-14R. And riding the Harley, wow.....I don't know why I waited until now to get one. My Wide glide is the most comfortable bike I have ever riden (of course I replaced the stock seat with a touring seat and sissy bar for my wife) I absolutely love this bike. I just installed a Vance and hines slip on after a Honda ST1300 rider told me that my Harley is too quiet.
It's a lot louder now. My wife loves the pipe. I really didn't expect the slip on to get that loud.
I have a few questions, I have been riding sportbikes for 18 years. I have always worn a motorcycle jacket with armor. Plus, I have always used a full face Shoei helmet. I feel awkward riding our Dyna wide glide with my wife and we are both wearing full face helmets. I don't plan on changing it, I"m just wondering what other H-D owners would think when they see us. Should I even care?
I agree with the "do what you want" responses, in general. However, I do wish someone with experience would have talked me out of a couple gear decisions I made the day I bought my first HD...
Regarding the armor, I'd skip it. Unless you go down at 150mph and slide 300 feet, a good sturdy jacket (HD makes excellent jackets) is going to protect you fine. This comes from experience. When you take your HD to the track you can put the armor back in.
I've always preferred a FF helmet. Not just for safety reasons... However, if some day I end up on a road sofa with a windscreen, I might go with less helmet...
