New HD guy here
Having never worked on a bike this was a little daunting at first. The bike was laid over on its side and the forward control chipped the front tappet block, bent the front exh pushrod, pushrod cover, dinged the tank and smashed the exhaust. So I bought the service manual and started studying it like it was a college text book.
I liked the bike but it wasn't my dream bike.... yet. I took it all apart and repaired the tank with bondo and ice to keep costs low. I stripped the paint and painted the bike semi-gloss black because the Ness style fairing only looks right, to me, in black. I bought a Mikuni HSR42 (Ebay $425), V&H pro HS 2 into 1 ($333 my friends shop), Arlen Ness narrow glide cali-fairing (Dennis Kirk $170), replaced the tappet block (HD $80), pushrod (Free), removed the bag supports, replaced the smashed turn signals ($80), Ness mirrors ($80), and have a badlander seat en-route ($160). Before I found this bike I volunteered at the aforementioned friend's shop and in return they gave me employee discounts on a lot of my parts!
Long story long but still trying to be short I built my dream bike for under $5,000 and it's a Harley. I get mad compliments every time I ride it, not that those things matter to me, but it's nice to have your work appreciated. I had so much fun I think I might just buy project bikes from now on.
