I took the class because it was mandatory for me while I was active duty, in order to register a bike. I went back & took the Advanced Riders course after I got familiar with my bike, learned a lot in both courses.
Here in California age 21 and below it is mandatory ($150.00) to take the safty course for a MC License and for adults over 21 it is an option ($250.00). I have never taken it but have heard it has something for everyone (skill level) I did mine the old fashion way at the DMV. oh and welcome to the HDFourms..

here in washington, the course is mand. for those under 18.. i took it back in 97 and my wife took it in 2010 after she got her bike... the course is highly recommended to take , it brings into light the things you do on the bike and why you do them... well worth the $$$
Wow, those are some expensive safety courses. Here in IL I took that course back in 2000 and it only cost a $20 refundable registration deposit (my course was through the university). They only charge that because the course is very popular and it helps keep people from signing up but then not showing up. After passing I told them to take the $20 and put it into the program.
It was a really fun class. I think I'm going to look into taking the advanced class this year.
Rider's Edge (or similar) will be the best money you ever spend if you intend to ride. Some states require the class and/or allow the class to administer the road skills test instead of going to the DMV.
Those beginners courses are very good, but remember they are just beginners courses. As an avid motorcyclist you know that your learning does not stop there. Seek out advanced courses and continued the learning.
And all the classes in the world will have minimal effect if you do not engage in regular scheduled practice. Proficient motorcycling is a perishable skill, and diminsihed skills combined with over confidence can have bad results.
Meeting up with your friends to go for a ride and have lunch is NOT the same as regular practice. There is a reason that althletes practice all week long, and then show up two hours before the game to take batting practice or run through plays. You wouldn't bet $100 on a quarterback who never practices and just shows up on Sunday to play the game would you? So why risk your life by not practicing? If the QB screws up they lose the game. If you screw up you lose much more.
Dedicate 20-30 mins a month to regular practice. Nothing fancy, just the basics, posture, head and eye placement, chin on shoulder head turns, figure 8s, tight circles, and threshold combination braking. So the next time you are meeting your friends at 10am to go for a ride, show up at 9:30 and practice. That way when you launch, you will be warmed up and ready to go!
