The Ninja was my first bike. I had an 01. Rode it hard and dirty, and crashed it in Vienna, actually, since you're from NoVa. I am too. Was raised a stones throw from Tysons Corner. Still get up there from time to time to see family, only when I'm forced, though!
I transitioned to cruisers after going a few years without a bike. Got back from Iraq, in 07,with a bad back, and decided no more rockets... that was then, though. My next bike's going to be a Super Sport, but it'll sit next to my Harley.
