Default Question concerning a rear tire

I purchased a 2001 Sportster 883 and had ridden it back from the dealership, along the way I had 3 lay downs (not good I know but at least the bike and myself are OK) caused by the rear tire slipping out from underneath the bike. When I got home I noted a white stripe around the outside of my rear tire (probably from one of the lay downs) the stripe looks like it was worn into the tire (see attached pictures). The question I have for the community is, should I trust the tire or just get the tires changed?Question concerning a rear tire-20150226_134134.jpg

What does that mean? Something else wrong with the tire?

Given that the flashings are still on the tire, I'd hazard a guess that the tire is brand new. Tire surfaces are slick when new and require some time to wear in.

Check this out.

When you say it slipped out from under you, was that while stopping, in turns or just riding straight down the road? Was it on wet roads, gravel or dry pavement?

Laying the bike down three times on the ride home???? I would say you need to stay off the bike for your safety or there is maybe some oil coming out of the motor getting on the back tire. Either way, not good for your personal well being. Wow.....

Also check for loose spokes.

The rear tire slipped out from underneath me while in turns, (the last one was a manhole cover in the middle of the turn) the tires have a manufacture date code of 2300 and the roads were wet at the time. Wasn't supposed to rain but it did. . . The bike is new to me, but is a 2001 XLH883 with 6600 miles. I'm going to take the wheels off of the bike and have the dealership look at them and possibly warranty replace them. I've already talked to the dealership and they said that usually they leave the tires on a second hand bike so these are likely factory tires.

Exclamation

If I read that date code correctly those tyres were made in 2000, which is consistent with your bike being a 2001 model. However at 15 years old they shouldn't be anywhere near a bike, they are way past their 'use-by' date! I strongly recommend you talk to the seller and suggest they replace both tyres for new ones. Be polite, but persistent! (Check the dates first)

As for the white line, did any of your slides involve a white line? I suspect the tyre has simply rubbed against one of something else white, while the bike was on its side and the wheel was rotating. That is of little concern compared with those darned tyres!
