Default Date codes?
Do any of you know when the gov't started to require a date code on tires in the US?

I believe they changed how they are coded in 2000. I could be wrong though, it wouldn’t be the first time.

most mfg date coded their tires even back to the 60's.
at one time it was a free for all so big brother standardize the coding with 3 digit and because of the last digit being the year, could mean at least a decade between so they went o the 4 digit code.
the same happened with OBD. free for all till i believe 1996. i still have an old OTC scanner with cartridges and connectors for diff makes. been trying to get rid of it for 50 bucks, cost over 1000 back when.

So, if a friend has some tires in the garage with no date codes, he probably shouldn’t use it. ?? Asking for my friend.

brand also makes a diff
there probably is a code. some old coding was cryptic.

Sorry, they went to the 4 digit date in 2000, prior to that DOT required a code starting in 1971, but 3 digit date meaning years 1972, 1982, 1992 would have the same code (ie. 302 would be the 30th week of a year ending in 2).
