I wonder how many service guys have put a brand new tire that had a screw in it on their own bike , because some owner insisted that they wanted a new tire to be replaced on their bike . Only because they couldn’t convince him that the tire would be OK .

Someone said above, check the 4 digit date code 2 digit week/year, honestly, I would just replace it regardless of what year, and mileage. The last thing anyone needs is a blowout at highway speeds.

Avon tyres:-
It is essential to follow the material manufacturer’s instructions. Repair by buffing the tubeless lining and applying a cold cure, or vulcanized repair, of minimum 25mm (1”) diameter to seal a penetration of not more than 3mm (1/8”) diameter. The external hole should be sealed with rubber sealant to prevent the ingress of moisture which could affect the casing cords.

NB. Straight plug type repairs must not be attempted as there may be insufficient tread rubber and casing material to provide sufficient security for the plug location.

In the event of an emergency ‘get-you-home’ repair, it is permissible to use an inner tube of the correct size and type but the Motorcycle Manufacturers’ Instruction Manual should be consulted. In some instances, an adapter collar may be required if car-type rubber tubeless valves of greater diameter than the standard metal type have been used originally.

If tire foam filler repairs are used as an emergency measure the tire will have to be replaced when you return home. The chemicals in these products decompose the rubber linings of tires.

Since Manufacturers opinions do vary, its best to contact the manufacturer of your tire if you have any doubts.

( I personally have plugged several over the years and wore the tires out with those plugs installed.)
that’s quite interesting that Pirelli and Metzeler have differing views on plugs, because Pirelli owns Metzeler.

Best way and only way to properly and permanently repair the tire IF it’s other wise a good tire is to take it off and boot/ patch it from the inside. IMO.

plugs are a temporary fix to get you home or to a repair shop where you can actually fix it. Working on a farm I have plugged every type of tire and a bunch of them from truck tires to ATV and equipment tires, even had the displeasure of plugging my own rear motorcycle tire last summer. And they all leak. Might be slow, but they all leak to some extent unless you are using some sort of secondary tire leak fix like slime, tire-ject (probably the best) etc. and sure I’ve ran tires with plugs until the end of a tires life but I personally wouldn’t run a motorcycle tire the rest of its life with a plug. When I got my flat, I plugged it, got home and ordered new tires.

So your saying that a piece of very soft rubber that has absolutely no reinforcement in it and is only about a 1/8 inch thick by 11/2” round will safely repair the integrity of the tire .
