I have balance dozens of tires with Dyna beads and never had a problem, never had one come back to be rebalanced. That's all I use.

Here is where it gets funny. I walk in with the wheel/tire. I could tell the tech was pissed off already. I hand him the tire and he starts in “I don’t give a F what anyone says - every tire needs weights, blah blah…” so I look at him and say - “you would ride along with four and a half ounces on your front wheel? you’d be ok with that? Really? You don’t want to do this, give me back my f’ing wheel and I’ll take it somewhere that gives a ****.” He quieted down, pulled the core, deflated and broke the bead. Put it up on the clamps and said “what do you want me to do” - I told him to rotate the tire 180 and check it. (I already stripped off the quarter pounder worth of weights). He did, reinflated it and put it on the balancer. Spun it and loe and behold, 1.75 oz opposite the ounce and a quarter steel stem and Fobo TPMS cap. Nice. A crap load better than 4.5oz.

I just looked at the tech and said, “well, how about that…” - the boss then came over and said “Sorry”.

Guess where I’ll never go again…
Just curious... Where was the orientation of the yellow dot on the tire when they first mounted it and where did it end up after they rotated it 180*?

Michelin doesn't put dots on their tires anymore. I looked for it and nothing on either front or back tire.

Not entirely true. My 120/70-21 Commander 3 has a red dot on it purchased in August.

Edit: Not sure what the red dot is used for though. They mounted it by valve stem.

Until this I bought my current 2019 FLHTP, my two 1989 and my 2002 ElectraGlides I balanced the rim without the tire. I would recheck when I'd replace the tires, but I never needed any additional weights with the Metzeler 880 or 888 tires when I put the dot on the valve stem.

On my 2019 FLHTP, I use these - https://www.centramatic.com/wheel-ba...ype=Motorcycle

I'm still on the first set of tires with this system, but at 7000 miles, they look good!

For the first 40 years of street riding I changed my own tires
Had neither the equipment nor the inclination to balance a wheel /tire
I suspect many of us old guys did the same.

Red dot is supposed to be the high or low spot on the tire, where the belts overlap. Yellow is supposed to be the lightest spot on the tire. Maybe they are only applied if such conditions exist. Which doesn’t explain why then my issue was resolved by rotating the rubber 180 when no dots exist.

who knows.

nevertheless, it’s resolved. But I’ll sure we’ll continue to get advice.

“Michelin does not use dots or other marks. Just stick the tire on any way you see fit then balance.”

“It is NOT universal among manufacturers.”

Dunlop uses it. And as posted, yellow is where the valve stem should align. Red is as posted, where tire meets and is heaviest.

Default Balance Act

I went through this same thing 2 years ago with a BRAND NEW wheel from H-D. Had the tire installed, put it on the bike, rode fine.... Until I hit about 68 mph ! WTF?! I had balance beads installed. Took the wheel back to the shop and long story short, ended up rotating the tire 2 or 3 times and it only moved the weight issue or made it worse. Took the tire off the rim and spun it on the balancer. The rim bare, was almost 4 oz. out ! GREAT. So I had to go with conventional weights. Now there's a good look. Sure made me feel good about spending all that $$ on a new CVO wheel. It does run nice and smooth, so I don't really think about it. After all, it's not a show bike. I just bought the matching rear last week. Will be checking the balance before tire install. If it's out more than an oz., I will add some Devcon to the light side and move on.
Anyone looking so close to someone else's bike is probably up to no good anyway.

I went to dyna beads…and never looked back. Smooth as silk ruding. One of the advantages is that the tires never loose balance from west. And no, they don’t sound like a “Hula Hoop”.
