Default Duece tire retrofit?

I have an '03 Duece and I'd like to put the tire from cvo Duece which I belive is a 180. I've heard several opinions on required modifications and my HD dealer just told me if would fit with no modifications. Does anybody out there have the answer for me? Any help is appreciated.

There have been numerous post regarding this mod on this and other boards. Some say you need the HD wide swingarm kit (most don't go that route) Others are using the Vulcan kit. Still others are just putting the Dunlop GT502 SE 180 tire on and it seems to work fine with no changes. Some are going to an 18x5.5 wheel to expand their options for tires.

Staying with your stock wheel (4.5in) there are really only 2 choices for tires. Dunlop SE GT502 and the Pirelli Night Dragon 180/60B-17.

I'm about due for tires and will be slapping a 180 on mine. I haven't decided on what set of tires yet as I've been trying to get more info on the Pirelli 180/60B-17 Night Dragon on a Deuce (would love to see pictures). The Dyna guys have been using that tire and seem to like it, I'd be interested to know if you would need to use the Vulcan kit with it or not.

Hope I helped you a little. I'm still trying to get enough information to make a decision myself.

I appreciate it. It sure seems strange that nobody seems to know for sure. My bike is in shop now waiting for an answer. I'll look at the tires and just have them put it on and see what happens I guess. It sounds like the potential problem is with clearance for the belt then? I bought new set of wheels last time I changed the tires...and chrome calipers, ss cables, etc. so I don't want another $3000 tire change. I don't want a real soft tire as my Bridgestone Battleax only lasted maybe 4500 miles or so.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

Belt clearance is always a problem when fitting a wider tyre, also fender clearance.

You can check for any clearance problems. Some tyre brands give fitted widths on their website. They may also give recommended rim width. Check for the tyre you currently have, also your preferred replacement. On your bike measure the actual clearance between tyre and belt guard, also between tyre and fender.

On my older bike I modified the belt guard to get in the wider tyre I wanted and have about 3/16 inch clearance between tyre and belt!

Be aware that actual tyre widths are not always the same as the 'size'. Of those I know (I prefer Avons) a Dunlop MT is 133mm wide, but an Avon is 136mm, their 140 is 143 and 160 is 167mm. So any 180 is likely to be wider than that!

Not sure if this helps or not, but I use Metzler 170 tires on my 03 Deuce with no problems. The Metzler it a great road-hugger on the Deuce.

OUZ, post back with your decision. Give those Pirelli's a good look.
