Apparently the first couple of years of the new bearings there was minimal grease in these newer cheaper bearings and they blew out with frightening regularity. Hence the 30 K replacement recommendation.
Well engineered wheel bearings with the right grease and proper installation should last indefinitely. Unfortunately, Harley's and a lot of other vehicles only get the proper installation; not much you can do about the engineering, but even on sealed bearings I often clean them out and put a top quality synthetic grease in them; can make a huge difference. Ball bearings just suck for wheel bearings, but if they're cheaper to make, we'll have to live with them.
