Default speedometer drive gear seal, important?

i just replaced my speedometer drive gear on my 99 FXR2, because I overtightened the axle nut and ruined the original. I noticed that when I overtightened the nut, I ruined a thin, black, paper like seal/washer. I ordered the new gear drive unit and installed it today, and rode the bike, everything seemed fine. I just now looked at my parts book and realized I forgot to bu7 and install this seal. Is it necessary? I guess they would not have designed it in there if it were not necessary, but I don't want to take everything apart again if I don't have to. Your opinions? And what is the purpose of this seal? Thanks

Wink

The part you are missing is #67098-87, seal drive unit. Says it all really! It helps keep water etc out of the innards of the nice new drive unit you just installed. Personally for 63 cents I would buy and fit one.

Thumbs up

Allen - thank YOU! I've ordered one for my old bike, having discovered I don't have one!
