Default What is causing this?

I have a front tire with 7000 miles on it that has only 4/32" of tread left and shows signs of slight cupping. Trying to figure out what's happening here. I am pretty religious about checking tire pressure, so that's not it, not aggressive on front braking, ride more in country than city. Any theories?

Have you tried increasing pressure? I regard Harley recommended tyre pressures as for guidance only, as the owners handbook is not very helpful. Also if you are using non-stock tyres check the manufacturer's website, as some brands use different pressures to stock tyres. If you are heavy, or ride 2-up, it helps to add extra air to both tyres.

Thanks for the tip, I ride 2-up most of the time.

Wink

I add an extra couple of psi to the front and 4 more to the rear.

there could be a few different reasons, what are you riding, size of tire and make. if an older bike you could have a wheel bearing problem causing the rubber to not ride centered. a larger diameter tire and thinner air pressure needs to be watched like you are but kept up according to tire recommendations not Harley, remember over pressure can cause wear like you experiencing also. if running stock rims you could have got a lemon tire, like anything out there manufacturers have bad runs, check fur uneven tread wear this is a good indicator. you say you ride two up the majority of the time, is your rear suspension set correct, believe it or not that will affect front tire wear as well as handling. Finally are the tires and rims self balancing, if not do you ever feel a vibration, even the slightest in the front end? hope this helps a bit.

Had my HD dealer check it out and everything is within tolerance, they were looking for a reason to warranty the tire but could find none. Bike is a 2012 Road King Classic, I bought new, still running original tires & rims, I run 42 psi in the shocks solo or 2-up, should reduce to 24 going solo, so that could be a factor. Dunlop spec. has max psi @ 41, Harley book shows 36, a couple more psi might help because I ride "heavy" most of the time. I make these adjustments and keep a close eye on it.
Thanks
