in September my wife and I will be taking our first cross country trip to celebrate both our 50th birthdays and our 30th anniversary we are shipping the bike to San Fransisco then going north to Oregon then south to Yellowstone then back south to Vegas then pointing it back toward Atlanta. Any advise on what to take, not to take, any special prep for the bike?
From Frisco, you will want to cross the Golden Gate and ride up the coastal hwy to Ave of the Giants and Redwood N.P.
Oregon- Crater Lake and stay at their Lodge
Coming out of Yellowstones N.E. exit,Tower Jct, Hwy 212 over Beartooth Pass. Also Hwy 294 (chief Josephs hwy) is Awesome.
South of Yellowstone- Grand Teton N.P. and Jackson
Vegas- Hoover Dam and ride route 66 to Kingsman.
Just Northeast of Vegas is Grand canyon, Bryce and Zion N.P
The entire state of Colorado, west of Denver is Great riding
Once you go, you will return. There is so much Great riding out west.
Make sure the bike in good shape, serviced, tires, brake padsetc.
Take a camera and have a safe trip!
This will be my first trip on the bike but I was out in the Colorado, Utah, Wyoming areaa couple of years ago ( my daughter's mother in-law is originally from Kimmer Wyoming so we went out to be shown off to her new family) did mesa Verde, dead horse canyon and Arches Np. the terrain is definitely different than here in GA. that is why I am concerned on what to pack and how to prepare
Thanks I am starting to put together cold weather gear. here in Ga. the chances of getting caught out in the cold is very slim, except today when I left for work at 6:00 am it was nearly 70 now at 6:00 pm its 35 with a freezing rain watch for tomorrowbut this is not the norm
You can still get some hot days in September. Get some water wicking underwear to help prevent monkey butt and bring along some triple anitbiotic cream just in case. A GPS in invaluable on cross country rides especially in cities. A small cooler in one of your bags for drinks. Don't overkill on clothes as you can always do laundry on the road and the extra space comes in handy with the wife along. Two pairs of footwear...one boots the other comfortable tennis shoes. Wind/rain proof light jacket. Suntan lotion. Make sure you're comfortable and not overdressed for the day. Stay away from heavy meals at lunch time and plan your day by hours not miles. I've done many long distance rides and know that planning is the key to a great time, sometimes riding more than 17 hours in a day. When you're tired rest and don't push it, of course you already knew all this but it's nice to be reminded.
Thanks fortunately even at our age my wife is one of those couple of pairs of jeans. tank-top see you in a month kind of girls so packing lite isn't hard. Just bought a streetpilot 2610 off eBay last night I am now looking for a couple of 2 piece rainsuits on eBay and a backrest bag of some brand ( thinking about the riggpack 950)
Riggs 950 is a good one. I have one that I used on my Vulcan Classic, don't need it now that I have the Ultra. Do not foget cold weather and rain gear. You will hit some in those places. Bear Tooth Pass was 44 when I went through last August, and a group an hour or two behind us said it was 34 and raining.
Enjoy the ride and be safe.
Do NO major service work to the bike within two weeks of leaving. Get it all done well in advance and get some riding time on it. The only thing you want to do closer to time is an oil change.
This goes for accessories, too. Get them on and tested in advance. NO installs within two weeks.
You can avoid a lot of roadside headache/annoying problems following this simple plan.
