I have a 2001 FXD and Im putting on 12 inch Flander Ape bars. I was told by my dealer thatI will have to cut the harness below the seat and add wiring to extend the lenth to make it to the 12 inch bars for my starter, directionals, horn etc. My question is does anybody know whereI can buy a wiring extension soI wont have to splice the harness? Thanks,Davey
I am getting ready to do an ape install (14.5) on my streetbob. I think I might just go with the solder route. It sounds about as easy, and should be a surefire way to get a good connection. Soldering allows you to make your cuts in a staggered fashion, so you don't get a huge bunch when pulling wire through bars. Good luck to ya. Keep us posted.

I did a handlebar swap and I spent 10 bucks max... get a roll of 12g wire some colored tape and some shrinkwrap.... alternate cuts... I did the cuts so that they ended up inside the bars, No problems at all..... Don't be scared just take your time.
I put 10 inch mini apes on 4.5 inch risers on my 03 Lowrider. There was enough slack in the wiring thatit fit without any cutting. I am getting ready to put 14.5 apes on and get rid of the 4.5 risers and run internal wiring. From what I've read I can do it without any cutting. I did need a new clutch and brake line.
I've beenthinking the same thing I kep hearing about all these people saying how BIG theyre 12 or 14's feel. I got 18's and sometimes I wish I'd gone 21.
Ok,So........If you open the rear fender underneath mud inspection cover and cut the y-ty out and open the rubber acess plug in the right front of the main frame and pull like hell Harley gives you the extra needed lenths without cutting any wires. Pull untill you see the weater pack plugs come out of the frame and dewire the packs/run the wires tru your bars and reconnect the harness into the weather packs. No cuts. Clean job. Hope this helps anybody thats in the process of now doing this....Davey
The rear fender has a acess rubber cover at the bottom underneath right in front of the rear wheel. It allows you to cut off the ty-wraps Harley puts in to undo the excess harness thats curled up allowing you to pull it tru from the front of the frame by the fork end to get to the weaterpack thats located in the frame itself so you can disconnect it. It allows you about 8 inches give or take...Hope this helps,Davey
yep, what davey said, but it's easier if, after you've pulled out the extra harness in front of the rear wheel, you have someone pulling from the front while you're pushing the harness from the back.
It's also easier if you remove the rear wheel. (i never did but you'll probably cut up your hand pretty good getting the harness out the hole.) I did this on my 98 and 01 dyna...i'm assuming it's still the same on the new ones but i haven't checked.
