Do you have an old Super B? The most common S&S for us is the Super E. When you buy a new carb. it comes with the intake as long as you get a kit carb for your year. On the Ironhead you buy new rubber seals and clamps and put it on. Not a big deal. I don't know if the carb bolt to the stock intake, but it's such an easy change, why not. Super B's are not always equipped with accelerator pumps. This makes for rough spots in the lower RPM's.
i dont have a super b yet. i was just looking at maybe getting one sometime and wasnt sure about the intake question.
was curious since i see super b's on ebay all the time but they dont come with a intake.
didnt know that about no accelerator pumps on the old ones till i ran into the info last night on some site. said a workaround is to roll on the throttle instead of a hard bump.
did the older super b's use a dual cable setup (push, pull)?
i see where most of the new super B kits use a two cable setup as well as the E and G.
I'm not sure if old S&S had 2 cables. I converted my '75 to an S&S E with 2 cables 8 years ago. The bendix never ran this good. You will need a new hand throttle to use 2 cables. And the 2 new cables. You could use the one cable on a new carb, but think about that, saving money may not be worth it.
from some of the pics i have seen, i dont think the older super b had a dual cable setup.
if memory serves me right,HD didnt go to a two cable until 1981.
im having other probs right now. the new bendix and gas tank came and i have put them on but now im not getting any fire at the plugs.
voltmeter shows the battery and coil good. took apart the kill switch housing and everything looked fine there. cant check the electronic ignition since it (repair manual and service manual) calls for a ignition test adaptor. dont know about the regulator or circuit breakers. havnet seen anything about testing them.
the bike fired fine until i changed the tank, carb, plugs and wires even though the plugs were the wrong ones.
I have an old Super B on my bike. Well I can't decide if I want to run it, so I've been switching back and forth between it and a stock carb.
Anyway, you're right it has only one cable.
The intake for the S&S has a larger throat then the stock intake. You could boltthe carbon the stock intake, but it will be slightly restricted from the smaller throat.
My Super B didn't originally come with an accelerator pump, but someone has adapted one to the carb. I can post a few pics of it if anyone's interested in seeing how it was done.
thanks jones.
i just won a older super b off ebay. it has a thunderjet on it but im not sure what it does or if and how to adjust it.
post the pics of the accelerator pump as i may throw one on mine.
i had heard about the stock intake being smaller that the S&S carb throatbut im hopeing it wont be that big a problem.
anyway of finding out what jet sizes to run on a 80 sportster?
i believe the old super b i just won has a 31 intermediate and 74 main.
jp cycles has the intake manifold from s&s for $48 take the same manifold as the shovelhead harley also ran several different intakes aluminum and steel the steel manifold conducts too much heat from the heads and tranfers to the carb causing inconsistant adjustments
