This new 96B in my 07 Heritage seems likein makes a knocking sound when I am at a constant speed at a low to medium RPM in any gear. Is this sound normal or not?
The new 96s with the 6-speed tranny requires you to run and shift at a higher RPM. I find if in 3rd, 4th or 5th I must keep the RPM above 2000. Runs better at 2500-3000. Hope this helps.
I agree with slope. With only 450 mile on my SG, I find that the RPM's work better at 2300-2800. I must say it has been a little hard getting used to the 96 and tranny over my 01 fatboy with the 88 and five speed - big difference in my shifting patterns
According to MoCo it's normal. Doesn't seem to be any failure due to it....like the others said keep it above 2500rpm and don't wrroy about it (MPG will go up too). In other words don't use 6th until going at least 70mph. I broke down and put a Speedo Tach in my RK Custom.
wHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE TO ME IS THAT YOU ARE IN TOO HIGH OF A GEAR FOR THE SPEED YOU ARE TRAVELING, (LUGGING THE MOTOR) THE SHIFT POINTS ARE HIGHER THAN PREVIOUS YEARS AS WAS STATED ABOVE. HARLEY DAVIDSON HAS AN UPDATED STOCK CALIBRATION FOR THESE BIKES THAT WILL HELP TO PREVENT ANY DAMAGE TO DRIVETRAIN COMPONENTS IN THE EVENT THAT THE ENGINE IS LUGGED.
The clatter can be caused by lugging but shouldnt at the speeds, rpms that some are getting it at.Get the bike hot as during extended hwy use, pick your speed, rpm and maintain that throttle position. Now ever soo slightly feed alittle throttle into bike and maintain that input. You now have the clatter esp if your bike has lwrs or at least a windshield and as long as windflow past your head doesnt drown it out.No helmet use makes hearing this easier. Most dealers require their techs to wear one!Hd has always thought people were quickly opening throttle for this noise to happen, and are using that for their excuse. The bike can be made to do it in a basically unloaded state. It will do this also on dyno as long as bike is hot whether dyno load is used or not.Yes HD knows of this and has tried to bury it instead of grabbing the bull by the horns. They would rather quiet a few owners than pay for fixing all with this. What they have done is scared away future buyers or at least made them think before buying new.
I did have some clatter when I was going through the initial break-in but it's gone now.I Still have a knocking evenwhen I rev the engine sitting still. It runs fine all together but better at high rpm's. Thanks for all the info. Please feel free to post more if you have more information.
Me too. 25 MPH in 2nd gear or 35 mph in 3rdmaintaining constant speed (very light load). I hear a slight knock sound that is bugging the crap out of me. Anyone come up with a cause/solution or is this normal?
