Maybe due to the longer (than the 88ci) stroke, these motors are more sensitive to "lugging". I find any rpm under 2500, the motor doesn't like to be leaned on.
I just bought an '07 RG about three months ago and live in Southeast Arizona. When I first bought the bike, I didn't notice any real noises, but then the ambient temperature was around 65 to 74 degrees at the end of March. What I've come to expect is that while riding in cooler morning temps now, the engine won't make any knocking noises. But as daytime temp warms up and the bike get warmer, the knocking (Pinging?) starts and gets more pronounced. I've also noticed the the 96-6's seem to run a bit hotter than the first generation twincams. This also backed up by the local Harley service department. I'm told that running synthentic oil will bring the temp down somewhat, but even though I've done that change, I still notice the noise, once the air temperature warms above say 85 degrees.
I've decidedmy first mod is going to be an oil cooler kit. I think this will help bring the overall engine temp down, thereby helping to prevent the pre-ingnition detonation I'm hearing.
My Harley dealer here say's that I'm not alone in this and that most if not all 96-6's here in AZ have that knock/ping noise and that Harley is aware of it and supposedly working on solution. And in fact, I have a good buddy with a new UC and his does the same thing. The service department asserts that it's not hurting in the engine, but in my experience, the pinging makes the engine actuall run hotter, making it ping more, making it run hotter, making it ping more.....etc. Once I get the new cooler installed, I'll re-post and write my results. Any other ideas....????
I have had my 2007 FLSTF 96Cisince January and have a knock in the engine. It started about 880 miles. Took it to HD dealer. They changed out the ECM and said that was the problem. NOT! After about 100 yards down the road, loaded it back up on the trailer and took it back to dealer. They are troubleshooting over the phone with HD techs. Now they are changing out the cams. I have 885 miles on it now. It is still at the dealer. It was about 80*F when I last got to ride and it is a very pronounced knock in the front cylinder. Not real loud when accelerating or decellerating. But when you get into 2nd and hold a steady throttle it sounds like a wrist pit has come loose. I hope you don't have the same problem, but something to check into.
Just took the bike in today for the 1K service and a SERT/Dyno tune. Tech says all the noises are "normal". $900 later my bike has a fresh change of oiland runs like it should from the factory. 1/2 of HD taxes paid (no pipes or a/c yet).
If the knocking I hear gets louder I'll just bring it back in as I've got 1 year and 10 months left on the warranty. No worries.
I Had the same sound, I was worried about it also.I took into the dealer to have them ride it and hear it. I had less than 800 miles on it at that time. They siad it sounded great! several days later I called the dealer to come get me and my bike off the side of road. It Broke down. The dealer said that the a valve was faulty, and blown the engine. It has less than 1000 miles. I have not got it back from the shop yet. I thought i was just being a new owner panzy. I say if something does not feel right take it in. And have them do a good job looking it over.
Wacked, thats the main issue w/these guys.Nothing is being done till they blow. Some CVO owners have had cylinders found out of round at the mileage you posted.Cant see why that problem didnt transfer to the 96 owners.
Stepped up to the 2007 Lowrider in December, A week or so later I asked the stealer what is up with the "pinging" and got some smoke blown up my yahoo. I started shifting at around 3000 rpm's (which is higher than my previous 2003 HD Hugger around 2400 rpm's). Runs like a Champ for the most part, rode to Texas to run it on the dyno and sure enough it's as close to perfect as it can get. I look forward to hearing about a solution... Darn thing sure runs hot though, I would like to get a gauge soon.
Ride safe
yep, I have an 07 ultra, clatters about 2200, runs hotter than my 01 wide glide, also whines in 5th gear. read somewhere could be slight timing issue. heard you could take a little adv out to cure. I'm in the process of tuning with my sert, will post results
