I was toiling around for a while if I wanted a full engine guard or not. I like the clean look of the dyna without and the foot rests are usually too high for me to be comfy. I found an e-bay special with a bunch of parts from a lowrider (Including highway peg mounts ) for $5! I also wanted my driving lights low and liked the HD kit (includes all parts, mounts, switch, everthing for $129) so I got this idea:
I bought a 12" piece of solid 6061 aluminum 1 1/4" in diameter (size required for driving light install)
I center bored each end and tapped it for the bolt to attach it to the highway peg mount. I then cut it from either end 4 3/4" and milled a flat spot to tighten it down with an open end wrench. I then milled the end to accept the peg and countersunk a allen bolt to hold the peg.
All I have to do is cut a slight slope along the peg slot so it can kick up when cornering hard.
I will be powdercoating it black too so it blends in with the frame.
I chose aluminum because most of my tools are for woodworking and you can do most operations with wood tools on aluminum. Also, if in an emergency situation and cornering wayyy hard to where it will contact the tarmac then it will most likely rip through the threads instead of taking me down (that's my theory anyway)
Overall it came out real nice. The pegs almost match the diameter of the aluminum.
Very cool. I hope they work out for you. I have the fog lights on the crash bar and the only thing I don't about them are the way they reflect from the front forks. Your lower installation might be better.
Fresh out of hy Hilbilly powdercoat oven!
I will bolt the highway pegs on today but the lighting will wait for another day.
The powdercoat came out great!
Great idea, if it works. Might just light up that section of the road around your front tire for microsecond before you pass it. Not familiar with the beam/intensity of those lights. Good luck with that...
