STAGE 1 upgrade - clarifying question....
(Note: I only have 300 miles on it - if that makes a difference)
I asked Mikes's Famous and they charge $1000 (seems high) to install SE slip-ons, high flow air cleaner and a re-map.
Questions:
> I assume it's a re-map or is it a SERT or powercommander that is installed on the bike with this kit from Mike's?
> I don't have any problems installing slip-ons or the air cleaner, but what do I do for a re-map (is that what is done)?
> If I do the above (this is where I'm confused), do I buy a PowerCommander or SERT or install the slip-ons, air
cleaner and have Harley do the rest?
> Can I install just a High Flow air cleaner without doing any adjustments to the bike?
I appreciate your answers and time on this,
Thanks, Douce
If your capeable of doing it yourself you could easily do it for around $700 with a PC depending on choice of slipons. SERT is about $150-200 more. Either way you have a tuning device for upgrades.
Did your Harley dealer install it?
Sorry dumb question >> Is the SERT the 'download' or physically installed on the bike?
How do the SE slip-ons sound compared to stock?
Thanks,
Douce
Save your self some money and call FuelMoto, ask Jamie to put the correct map on it for you.
I had mine done at a dealer, actually before I picked the bike up - since I bought it towards the end of what was supposed to be the end of winter here in CT, I figured let them do it while they have it....

The SERT doesn't actually install on the bike, it is just the interface unit to let them do the download. The SERT I have has part number 32114-01A labeled on it. Make sure you get the SERT when you leave - I actually had to go back inside and have the service tech find the one he used and I paid for - I don't think they were trying to scam me, I think he just forgot, but still try and prove after you left that the one on his bench belongs to you.
The sound is OK - like I said I had them install everything before I actually picked up the bike, but when I went to sign my life away the dealer let me take the bike for a quick spin. The SEs are louder than stock, but they still feel almost like they are restricted too much at low RPMs/idle (thank you Mr. EPA). But, when you are on the road and you give the throttle a good twist, they come alive at around 2500-3500 RPM. I have a set of SE's on my '06 Sportster (last set before the EPA restrictions) and IMO they are louder and sound fuller. I will most likely look to "trade up" at some point, but not immediately.
The dyno measured they bike @ Max HP of 65.56 and Max Torque at 77.12ft-lbs. Max HP happens between 3000-3500 RPM and Torque at 5,000RPM give or take.
Hearing the radio is no problem with the SEs either at idle or on the highway.
Hope that helps!
Sean

I'm learning that engine or exhaust upgrades are a tough choice when your looking to upgrade and don't know what it going to sound like.
I like the sound from the stock 07' exhaust and slightly louder/deeper would be OK.
It would be nice if there were 'wav's' out there that you could download and listen too on your computer before making your choice.
This reminds me of when I was buying a aftermarket seat without sitting on it. A lot of forum reading and research helps make the choice easier.
If anyone knows of a site or sites were it's possible to actually listen to different exhaust that would also be appreciated.
Thanks again for any info. on Stage 1 upgrades,

There are some posted here, a bit outdated though. https://www.hdforums.com/m_767986/tm.htm
Some of the manufacturers have them also but it's hard to judge how loud they arecoming through your speakers.
Go hang out at a Harley shop on a Saturday morning and ask questions.
Find someone that has the Supertrapp SE's, the old Screaming Eagles. You will like them.
Ah, this is one of the fun, tough decisions that we all must make when we begin to customize our ride.
I wanted to do the work myself. I also enjoyed the research component of the project. Read the forums, and "google" the heck out of the major pipe manufacturers, etc. You will learn quite a bit.
My goal was to eliminate the ridicule of the guys I ride with who said my bike sounded like a vacuum cleaner (stock pipes). I also wanted to improve HP and TQ somewhat.
You can see what I ended up with in my signature. I am very happy with the setup, but this is all about personal taste. Total cost the the slip-ons, stage 1 filter and PC III was ~$750.
I like the flexibilty of the PC III to change my setup down the road if I chose without going back the a dealer. Also, the dealer willlikely set up your bike to run too lean as they have to worry about EPA regs. With the PC III or other after-market options you are in control. Just depends on how much you want to do yourself. There is no one "right" answer.
BTW, I am not a mechanic and you can do the work yourself with some research. I installed the air filter, slip-ons and PC III in under two hours.
Good Luck and ride safe.
