Default '07 FLHX - 0 Miles now what?

To whom it may concern - I've always wanted to write that, anyway.

I have just finalized the paperwork on my 2007 FLHX in vivid black. Now I've never owned a Harley Davidson, but I've tested several for the programs and I needed a counter part to the Aprilia (that the wife just LOVED riding on - don't blame her just need to keep momma happy and sitting on a 3 inch wide seat ain't fun) in the garage. I will never own anything but a twin and the FLHX fit and looked the way I see HD's

My questions are simple - I don't take delivery until the following Friday, but have spent a tremendous amount of time looking into what are the best upgrades right out of the box.

Q1 - If you had to choose a "package" for pipes/slip on's & PCM upgrade. What would it be?

Q2 - If you had to choose a "package" for seat/backrest upgrade. What would it be?

Q3 - Is the break in really as important as everyone says? - Does the "break 'em in hard they run hard" not apply?

Any other input would be great - What to watch/do/start or look for ext.
Dennis

First Off -- CONGRATS & Welcome to THE OTHER SIDE

Your going to get alot of suggestions on all your questions... But I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the following

1) Head over to a Bike Event (Bike Night - Biker Friendly Bar - Poker Run - Rally ETC...) and look and listen - Find the SOUND "YOU LIKE" then talk to the owner and get the low-down

2) See # 1 - Seats fit different on most people - No one is really built the same way or ride the same way... Looking cool and lean sometimes has it's limits....

3) FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES ON BREAK-IN - Miles will click away faster then you think... & NO the Break 'em Hard does not apply with the newer COMPUTER BASED\FI Bikes

#1 Make it comfortable for both YOU and MAMA. If you want her to ride with you, she needs a smile on here face too.

#2 Make it yours - the sound, the look you want. The idea of looking around first is great.

#3 Keep it serviced. But the factory service manual and do some of the maintenance yourself. With the book, you will learn how things work and how to work on them.

#4 Enjoy - the new Harley, time with Mama and life.

SoCal's got it right, 100%.

However, I just picked up my 07 SG last month and here's what I did.

1) V&H Classic Slip-onswith HD Stage 1 kit. Stage 1 came on the bike, but I may swap it out for a PCIII later for more control over the fuel settings.
2) I went with the full size Tour Pack (not the chopped one)and quick release kit. That way it's 2-up with captains chair backrest for wife unit when she wants to come along, and just a quick snap to remove it for solo riding.
3) Better safe than sorry. You wouldn't want the dealership to point fingers if anything goes wrong in that first 500 miles.

As with all advice gleaned from the internet, your mileage may vary. =)

First, congratulations and welcome to this forum. You'll like it here, as there is plenty of good info to glean in these parts.

ORIGINAL: dpitts
Q1 - If you had to choose a "package" for pipes/slip on's & PCM upgrade. What would it be?
Decide your priorities between exhaust note and being able to hear the stereo. I have Rush slip-ons with 1.75" baffles and they have the right tone for me, providing great sound and excellent power down low and in the mid-range where I want it. Someone on this forum recently posted a dyno chart on his setup with Rush 1.75's, PCIII, and K&N (Ness) AC, and it was impressive. Torque peaked at 87 and was above 80 from 2200 and 5000 RPM's. His is basically the same setup I have, so I adopted his map for mine, with a few of my own tweaks for gas mileage in the cruise range. For a package deal and a map to go with the setup, check out www.fuelmotousa.com (ask for Jamie). They have other muffler options, too.

Q2 - If you had to choose a "package" for seat/backrest upgrade. What would it be?
I have a solo Mustang with backrest (#79100) and it is excellent. Corbins are also excellent but more expensive.

Q3 - Is the break in really as important as everyone says? - Does the "break 'em in hard they run hard" not apply?
Some will tell you to "ride it like you stole it," but I think that's bad advice for break-in. In the 45+ years I've been messing with cars and MC's, I've never seen a manufacturer recommend this, and all specify to break in by a gradual procedure. Basically, follow the instructions in the manual and vary the speeds. Never go out on the highway and leave it at a given speed, but constantly accelerate moderately and roll-off the throttle. Keep the speeds within the recommendations in the manual. I followed it and then some, gradually tapering off 'til the bike had about 2k on the odometer.

For more, do a search on "break-in" on this forum. Some recommend a "heat-cycle" procedure, and I don't think there would be anything wrong with this. I've never done it, but it may work without issues.

I never understood the low speed break in. I rode mine like a normal bike, it has a warrenty. What can they say " O this was caused by you runningat Xmph during the first 500 miles", I think not. I don't think that would fly. I rode mine at typical speeds during the break in period.

As far as extras:
You might as well spring for the passing lamps. That was my first add on. The factory head lamp is crap. Then spring for an after market head light bulb --- plenty of options.

I changed the factory seat, some people like the orginal. To hard for me. I do a lot of longer rides.

Tour pack - I haven't bought one yet. Myself Im going with the chopped for the lower look. Sleek is my style.

The6 foot radio whip Harley uses, well this is real good to hit you in the face when you step aroun the back of your bike. I have changed it out once for a shorty that I bought from Harley then I lost the ability to listen to the radio. LOL. Reinstalled the whip and want to order a better one from some where. Folks on here talk about one that picks up real well. The one I boughtfrom the dealer would not pick up squat! Still looking for a good one myself. The answer is not to cut it off, I remember that from electronics training 20 plus yrs ago.

You will love the bike. It handles and rides like a dream. A real screamer. I have been impressed with the motor and trans package.
