I'm not an authority on apes, because I have only been on one bike that had them, mine. I like the feel of them and they give the bike an old school look. I don't know how they would look and feel on every Harley, but I sure do like them on some of the models.
That's the kind that I have on my Springer, the mini-apes. To me they are just the right height. They come up to about my chest level and they feel a lot better than the stock bars that my bike came with.
Yes I did. When I looked at them in my HD catalog and talked to the parts man at the dealership, I had to order a new set of cables to go with the apes. All that they had for cables for my particular model was the braided stainless. I'm glad that I got them, because I think that they look sharper than the black rubber ones that my bike came with.
I like 'em for comfort.. I like the mini apes, rather than the long ones..

When I looked at my new Sporty for the first time, the first thing I told the guy I bought it from was, "Those apes will have to go." I've always been a drag bar guy. My last bike had an awesome set of Carlini "Beefy Bars" that just rocked. Anyway he said he had the originals and would put them back on for me. Then he asked if I wanted to ride it. I told him I didn't think I did because of the apes, but he convinced me to give it a try, and they were great. In fact I told thimm to leave them on. I adjusted them to my hieght, and now I wouldn't want anything else. And I love the look. (They are the minis though).
I've never ridden with apes but I am one of the rare one's who likes the stock bars on my bike. The riding postion is perfect for me. I must be weird though because I find the stock seat comfortable too....especially since it's really starting to mold to my cheeks...lol...
I have also been thinking of doing this on my Sportster. I love the look of the mini-apes. Do any of you have them on a 1200 Custom, I was wondering on the risers, if I have to much.
SPRINGER did you have to go longer wires, or was it cables and brake line all? And how much did it set you back? Thanks
