Default Fairing for my Road King

Ok fellow bikers, I'm new to this site although not new to bikes. I've done some research on this site and the internet trying to come up with a solution to mount a streetglidefront fairing/windshield to include the inner fairing on my 02 Road King.I will mount 4 speakers in the dash using stock speaker locations and the empty tach and speedo holes to mount 2 4" speakersHowever I dont want it to be permanent I'm trying to use it like my removeable windshield that I have now, where I can take it off when I want to let the wind blow thru my old gray hair LOL. So far I haven't found any info that anyone has done this before. I know many of you will say buy an aftermarket type like quadzilla and othersor maybe eventrade my RK for a SG, none of those are optionssince I've tore this bike down to the frame and totally customized it and would sooner cut a nad off than to partwith the King.I've seen peopletake a SG fairing and mount it to a Jap bike but never seen anyonemount a fairing that is removable. I may end up designing andhave a machine shopmake the brackets for me. Have anyone seen this done? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, RK NUT

the quadzilla is probably the easiest (and proven) way to get it done.

I know what you wrote about an aftermarket fairing company. But, it seems that this is exactly what you are looking for. Most of those companies fairings are very similar in shape and design to the ones found on the SG. And are designed to be taken off. Look into that. Seems to be what you are really wanting to accomplish.

Steve, take a look at Dead Center Cycles' fairing - it fits your standard RK windshield brackets and appears to be very well made: Dead Center Fairings

Thanks for the info and reply, and by the way your RK's are sweeeeet! I guess I didn't give enough info. So I'll elaborate a little further. The after market fairings are great if you've got the 2000 to dump into one, however I dont. So I picked up a brand newSG fairing on ebay forfairing set up on ebay for 400.00 in the color I need all I have to do is figure out a way to mount it with quick detach brackets. I'm seeing an engineering challenge indoing this. Howeverit will be worth it in the end. It's hard to believe with all the great minds riding harleys no one has done this yet. Any ideas?

I've got the Dead Center Cycles fairing, easy on and off, plus you can lock it on for security purposes.

I have had the outer fairing off my '04 police model EG many, many times primarily for adding civilian features. And I have been reading my HD Service Manual a couple of times recently in preparation for swapping out the inner fairing and cap with painted parts and installation of spun aluminum gauges. So I have a pretty good working knowledge of how the MOCO assembles and installs the batwing on the EG.

If you manage to install a SG/EG batwing fairing with an inner fairing for speakersas a detachable fairing on your Road King you should receive a prize for the best DIY project on touring bikes.

Perhaps you can get one of the guys with the DCC or other detachable fairing to shoot a bunch of pics and youcan replicate what the aftermarket vendors have done, adapting it to the SG parts you have.

I have emailed a couple of companies and so far they're not willing to give up any info, according to them they're fairing has different mount locations than the harleys do.
I calledHD this morning and the all the parts except the outer fairing only run 292.00 ( I have the outer already) so far less than 550.00 I can assemble a complete fairing minus stereo, that beat the hell out of1500.00+. My biggest challenge is a detachable mount system. When I do come up with a system I may patent it. I have a machine shop in town with a CNC machine that make anything I can design. This may be an alternative to expensive aftermarket fairings. One other thing I need to look into is the width of my handle bars as the bars on the SG are wider at the base than standard bars, I have Fat barinstalled now so I'll keep you guys posted. Keep the infoand suggestions coming !![sm=biker2.gif]

My best friend has partially solved your problem. And I am also going to replicate his work. A fun little project.

Here is what he did. Take a standard RK detachable windshield. Attach the outer fairing shell directly to the windshield. He did this by marking and threading directly into the plexi windshield and attaching only across the top of the fairing (the top of the windshild lines up perfectly and sticks up above the fairing). He didn't even attach the bottom since it slides behind the driving lamps and the wind holds it on (doesn't even wobble). He put the chrome trim across the top of the fairing to cover the bolts. From the front you can't tell if its not stock. He didn't even paint it. He pick up a HD fairng bra off eBay (with the embossed HD logo) and coverd the fairing. Looks great.

From the back however is a different story. He did not use an inner fairing, but purchased a Ron's radio (IMHO the best looking attachable radio) off-line and mounted it to the back of the windshield. Looks pretty good because it covers up most of the back of the windshield, and has decent sound. It may not be as nice as a stock inner fairing or an aftermarket, but about $200 in parts (not including the radio) it is a real nice looking, quick detach set-up. His total costwas around $600.

I have already accumlated the parts I need for only $125, and I am going to try my hand a painting the fairing.I'm not looking to be a SG (thats why I have a RK) but it willbe a great cool weather option up here in the great white north.

if your "problem" is not wanting to spend the money on a fairing that is DESIGNED to perform the exact way you want it to- thats not a 'problem'

i would much rather save some $ to buy the correct part than spend countless hours of trial/error and failure (not to mention the time, $ and frustration your CNC guy will get) and buy an aftermarket fairing- with a nice looking inner fairing w/radio and speakers- than rig up some ghetto-ingenuity stock fairing.
