Proper Throttle Adjusting
Just took my 2005 FXDL in for its first service, came back with the throttle adjusted way diferent, it has a huge amount of slop at the start, maybe 20 degrees when nothing happens. This causes me difficulty and makes the throttle jerky. Can someone tell me what is the proper way to adjust my cables on a carberated twin cam please
My bike was like that when I purchased it new. There is some kind of throttle tensioner **** under the throttle that if you turn in will take the slack out. Not real sure what the purpose of this **** is. I think to make the throttle stiff or loose to your preferance. Worked for me.
That adjuster **** is the "poor man's cruise control" and doesn't adjust the actual throttle cables. If you have too much slack in your throttle, here is the procedure:
You have 2 throttle cables; a throttle (pull) cable, and an idle (push) cable. There are 2 adjusters located near the hand throttle. Figure out which cable is the throttle and which is the idle.
1) Remove the air cleaner. Turn both adjusters and locknuts clockwise as far as they will go. Both cables should have zero adjustment at this point.
4) Point the wheel straight ahead. Turn the throttle wide open & hold it. Turn the throttle cable adjuster counterclockwise until the cam stop just touches the boss on the carburetor. Tighten the locknut and release the throttle.
3) Turn the front wheel full right. Turn the idle adjuster counterclockwise until the cable housing just touches the spring in the cable support at the carburetor. Work the throttle and make sure it returns to the idle position every time. If needed, turn the adjuster clockwise until the throttle returns to idle. Tighten the locknut.
4) Start the bike, let it run at idle, and turn the front end from side to side, making sure the idle speed doesn't change.

Usually, the cable closed to the ride is throttle...adjust that to take out slack as needed, then, open throttle wide open and adjust the return (idle) cable.
