Break in period question
When they say to not run the bike at one speed for a length of time during the first 500 miles,
how much time at one speed is too long?
5 minutes?
10 minutes?
30 minutes?
Its kinda hard to go anywhere without running at one speed for 5 or 10 minutes.
While we are at it, what does varying the speed do?

I Don't think anyone could give an accurate answer to this question, It's common sense here to just vary speed constantly up and down and there are no set time limits on this.They are trying to say I believe that you shouldn't cruise at a set speed for extended periods of time. Just make sure during the break in ( within the first 50 miles) to do a few rapid accels and decels to force the rings out against the cylinders so that they seat 360 degreese around the circumference, and not on the high spots (like they would babying it)

Is 5 minutes too long? Is 30 minutes too long?
I honestly have no frame of reference in which to even take a guess at what this means.

30 minutes is TOO long, a few minutes is more like it ,but like I mentioned, it isn't that hard to vary speed every few minutes here. I find it difficult to maintain exactly the same speed on a road due to up hill and down hill which pretty much takes care of "vary speeds"
If you check out this site http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm You'll see that the break in happens very early in the process and if done correctly, you do not have too much to sweat.

One last question if you will.
I have 205 miles on the bike now, so I'm well past that first 50.
I was told to keep it under 55 mph till I have 500 miles.
Is that also horsecrap or should I follow that one?

Can't hurt, but it is a bunch of you know what! Most all the breakin if done right ,is behind you allready, but do what you are comfortable with.
I've always broken in my bikes and cars the way it explains in the motortune article for over 40 years and never had any problems with the motors at all. They run exceptionally well and use no oil. Being a mecnanic for just as long, I would see if there were any issues also.
The secret is the first 50 miles and to force the rings out with bursts of power then decell.

I was told to keep it under 50 for the first 50 miles and under 65 from 50 miles to 500 miles.

One more for good measure...
The owners manual pretty much says that since its an air cooled engine
and you shouldn't let it idle for more than 45 seconds or a minute, what happens
at those 3 or 4 minute traffic lights or when you are in stop and go traffic for extended periods of time?
I cant imagine that they would think you can keep the bike in more or less constant motion...

Kepp it under 3000 rpm for 500 miles and do'nt let it lug below 2000 rpm while torque is on the engine is what I was told.My Glide runs 3000 rpm at 72 MPH.Like TCSTD said,just let the RPM'S very some while riding for 500 miles and you'll be fine.My dealer told Me the first 50 miles is what counts.Your rings are already set and that is the main purpose of brake in.
