Default Help, Road Glide fairing removal

Hi,

I would like some input on the removal and installation of the outer front faring for a 2007 Road Glide. I have a set of Hog Tune speakers that I would like to install. I have had the speakers for almost three weeks. I have been waiting to buy the 2007 service manual. I have called three local dealerships and each one does not know when they will receive the service manual. Each dealership says that the removal and re-installation is a real pain and that it will take two people for the re-installation of the front fairing.

Having been a helicopter mechanic in the Marine Corps I am mechanically inclined. I do know however that having the right tools to accomplish the job is critical.

I am afraid that I will be able to remove the fairing but re-installing it will be a problem. I understand that there are clips by the radio unit that the upper fairing need to attach to.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have done a search on the forum and the internet and have not been able to find much information on the maintenance process.

Thanks in advance.

The 07 manuals are available you just have to ask them to order it for you.

Piece-o-cake!

Remove the two front blinkers, then remove the 6 torx screws from the inner fairing.

Place a towel over your front fender. Straddle the front fender and lift straight up on the outer fairing to get it to come loose form the hooks you referred to.

You will then have to unplug the connector from the headlamps, by squeezing the the strain relief clips.

THere you have it...

In reference to the fairing removal,
I'm having trouble keeping the trim on between the inner and outer fairings. I tried grip glue, WOW
wont do that again, what a mess. I purchased some 3M emblem glue and hope this will work. Can I get these pieces from the dealer? Mine are full of grip glue !!! ARRRRR...

I'm confident you can get that strip from the dealer.....he might have to order it for you though. Just plain old clear silicone would be a good candidate for getting the trim to stay put.......daub it with a toothpick every six inches or so, and let it set-up before you reinstall the fairing.
While you have the fairing off, you can take the opportunity to upgrade your speakers or upgrade your head lamps, install a hidden antenna, etc.

My 2 cents............good luck!

Well I did not have any problems pulling the outer fairing off. It lifted off the hooks just like the manual said. I found brake cleaner will dissolve the grip glue inside the trim. I remounted the strip with a little of the 3M emblem glue that is clear and held it up to dry with electrical tape strips every few inches. Also relocated the Dakota Digital box a little to see if the reception is any better. I also hard wired the Sat. radio to the cig lighter. To mount the XM power box and Dakota box I used industrial Velcro.

I've been looking at the headlight panel, looks like you could mod it to bolt in from the front instead of the rear with 3 button head allens. Black of course then all you'd have to do is pop the clear cover remove the 3 screws and it would come off in your hands. sure would make changing a headlight less of a nightmare on the road and give a lot easier access to the inside of you fairing for other things you might want to do. What do you who have taken the fairing off think of what I'm talking about, I've not had mine off yet and am basing my idea on pics that I've seen on ebay.

Removing the fairing is a piece of cake. Just don't leave out that "cover your front fender" step! And make sure the cover is something heavy.

Replacing it, however, will make you say words you didn't know you knew. It takes patience, and it's like Murphy's Law--the more in a hurry you are the longer it will take. I've had mine off twice--once it took me a half hour to get it back on, once it went back on the first try. You never know.

front rubber strips = order part number #58359-98 X 2 ($10 each, retail) Each strip has the special??? contact type glue, cement inside

I too am having trouble keeping part of the strip on - I have the problem because I pull the strips off and had the inner painted then put them back on - kinda like pulling a band-aid off and using it again - sometimes it works - then not???

take off your outer fairing,,, remove the old stips,,, clean the surface and put the new ones one - apply pressure to make them stick and all "Should??" be OK. I have not done mine yet - waiting until December - more work planned and will do it all at once.

Has anyone else here tried this trick??
