Fork Sliders removal, need some help!
hey guys,
I've removed the slider cover, however I have no clue what there talking about when they say 'compress and remove retaining ring from groove in top of slider bore'
it looks like, according to the diagram, the dust seal is still there and I cant get at the oil seal retaining ring. Am I missing something here?
I skipped that step, thinking it would just come out with the 'slide hammer' method but nothing is separating.
Any help would be appreciated it! (2008 street bob)

After you remove the slider cover you should be able to pop the dust seal up. Then you can see the retaining ring down inside the slider and compress it to release it.

DO NOT USE A SLIDE HAMMER !!!!!! you will ruin the groove and need a new down tube, under the dust cap is a retain ring, you can pop that out then slide off the tubes... please put the slide hammer as far from the bike as you can get it

I strongly recommend searching this forum for posts pertaining to this job posted by pkellymc, bberck, and/or sc-longhair. Helped me a lot. Search from chrome sliders or chrome lowers.
Joe, just to clarify, the instructions say to use the sliders themselves as sort of a slide hammer to break them loose from the forks. There's nothing about using an actual slide hammer. I agree - keep one of those away.

I did search actually, but my key terms weren't matching up I guess. I was following the manual way to closely, and I was concerned about breaking the dust cover, but you guys are right, it just pops up, THANKS!

In addition to removing the snap ring above the fork seal, you must remove the bolt at the bottom of the slider.

A bit off topic but I am concerned about removing the slider cover. I have a small brass drift in the notch below the cover and tapping it lightly but i'm worried its gonna **** it up. Did anyone use a vice or that fork tube holder HD makes to hold the tubes in place ? Any suggestions or input ?
