Default tightning the chain on my 883

I have a 1986 883 - I was cleaning my bike yesterday and was checking the tension on my chain. It seems to be very loose. Does anyone know the specs on the chain and here is the dumb question of the day - how do I tighten it? I saw what appers to be the tension screw but I am not sure. Thanks for any input!!

I suggest bidding on this manual.Owning a bike almost requires having a manual of some sort in my opinion.I have one for 2006 and one for 2002 and meither will help you.I do remember the chain gets checked with you one the bike sitting up straight not on the stand. Also at the end of each side of the swingarm are the adjusters and they need turned evenly after the rear axle nut is loose. My guess is about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of play with you on the bike would be close. Here is the link.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SERVI...spagenameZWDVW

All of the above, and measure the play at its tightest point.

Measure the slack in the chain at the point where the chain moves the most, the mid point between the two sprockets. You need to be able to move the chain about 1/2 an inch. Having it too tight is dangerous. There has to be enough slack in it to allow for the wheel movement as the suspension compresses.

You should get the manual and a torque wrench to tighten up the axle bolts correctly. If you lubricate the chain every 100 miles or so then you shouldn't have to adjust the chain all that often. I've got a chain that I've had to adjust once in 11,000 miles.

The tension spec in the manual is 1/4" to 3/8" (hot engine) and 3/8" to 1/2" (cold engine).

You tighten it by loosening the hex bolt and then turning the screw that's sticking down from the bolt.&nbsp\\; It has an allen slot on it which is hard to see since it's so low.

Wrong chain, that's for the primary chain.&nbsp\\;His bike is an '86 which has a chain drive where as you have belt drive.
