1948 Panhead Is an All-Original Survivor
Classic Harley-Davidson Keeps its Integrity — and much of its Original Character — while Turning Heads in Online Auction
Original and unrestored classic motorcycles are getting more and more popular — and expensive — these days. While collectors once coveted perfect restorations that left no bolt unreplaced, these days a little patina is just fine. As they say, “it’s only original once,” and originality is worth a lot of money in today’s market. A fine example of that notion is this 1948 Harley-Davidson Panhead, which is currently up for sale on eBay through Dec. 20.
It’s a refreshing take. One that is quite understandable. Once you take something apart and put it back together, especially if you replace a bunch of parts, it isn’t the same any more. Sometimes it’s better, but oftentimes it’s worse. As a result, 100% of the time it loses its original character.
When it comes to original and classic Harleys, the 1948 Panhead is one of the better ones on the market today. And when we say original, we mean it. The bike is unrestored, uncut and unpolished. Still in the frame is the original (rebuilt) motor. Plus, all the original numbers and marks are where they should be.
The rest of the bike, however, is in pretty remarkable original condition. The speedo still works, and from what we can tell from the photos, there aren’t any gas or oil leaks to be found. Even the original brake parts are still on the bike, with only basic maintenance performed to keep her running right.
Overall, it’s a gorgeous example of a classic Harley-Davidson bike. There’s really no reason to mess with perfection, and we’re glad nobody did in this case. It’s a reminder of a time when bikes were both basic and cool and didn’t require a stable of horsepower to get down the road.
