Roar on the Shore

For one week every year, Erie, Pennsylvania, becomes Motorcycle Heaven.

For its eleventh year, downtown Erie, Pennsylvania, was transformed into a motorcyclist’s paradise last week, with many city streets blocked off to make space for food, merchandise, live music, and motorcycles as far as the eye could see.

The Roar on the Shore motorcycle rally is a week-long event that’s traditionally scheduled in mid-July. Over the course of the week, the show was expected to attract over 170,000 motorcyclists, who were expected to raise about $25 million dollars in revenue for Erie.

While the weather was rough for a couple days during the week, hurting attendance somewhat, the big day – Saturday, July 15th – was blessed with gorgeous weather. In addition to meeting tens of thousands of potential new riding buddies, you could sample everything from wine to cigars to new Indian motorcycles.

We love our Harley-Davidsons the best, but we sure wouldn’t turn down a free demo ride on a Indian. According to a representative, over three hundred enthusiasts did just that, despite the rain on Thursday.

The local economy saw a big boost as bars and restaurants were packed to capacity with hungry and thirsty motorcycle enthusiasts all week long. With the downtown area transformed into a biker’s paradise, it made walking or riding from place to place much easier.

Of course, motorcycling is all about riding. Erie, Pennsylvania has some beautiful roads and parks to explore, and several rides and poker runs were organized throughout the week to explore Erie’s beautiful scenery and twisting, undulating backroads.

One of the charity rides even included a ticket to a minor league baseball game. How perfect does that sound? Great roads, a great view, and a great game. Add a draft beer and a hot dog and that sounds about perfect to us. We hope HDforums can make it to Roar on the Shore next year!
