I have an 08 RKC and would like to add a gps mount,
1. what have you found that works the best
2. what is the easiest way to hook up the wiring
3. I'm looking for something (a mount) that can be removed very easily and quickly I do not want it (the mount) permanently on the bike, I have TomTom Smart 45m
I do get alot of vibration on the bars at idle so a location other than the bars would be nice
Let's hear what you like, where you bought it, where it's mounted and of course any pics would be good
I use a Ram mount with the u bolt on the bars on my 08 Road Glide. It comes off in a couple of minutes. I have a mount for a Garmin Nuvi and a different mount for my Iphone. Depends on what I'm doing and where I'm going if I need either one. The RG has a cigarette lighter on the left side fairing and I just loop the cable behind the mount and down to the cig lighter socket. If I get off the bike I can snap the Garmin out the mount, unplug the socket and store it real easily.
Handlebars are the simplest place to fit a holder. eGlideGoodies has plenty of different types. If you carry a passenger make sure she can see it as well. Mrs B gives me directions when traffic gets busy, or we're riding through twisty hilly roads.
I use a RAM mount on the left handlebar clamp (clutch). I connected the car charger to a socket off of the extra headlight wires. The car charger set-up is in the fairing. I ran the GPS plug out of the clutch cable hole if the faring. I know you have a Road King but you should be able to do something similar.
The GPS does vibrate some at a light but is almost vibration free while riding.
For added secure connection and some waterproofing, I wrapped the car charger and socket with electrical tape. It helps the connection from coming apart and some waterproofing.
I've been using the suction cup mount that came with my garmin, suctioned to my fuel lid door, and plugged in to the cig lighter. Been doing that for 6 years. No issues.
