Then I stumbled over a Küryakyn mirror stem extender (P/N 1444), which is actually bent to an additional angle. Thus, the long part of the stem now points horizontally sideways, kind of parallel to the bar. So my mirrors stay above the bars (no looking down to spot what's in my back!), but go several inches to the side. Suits me, and the look is OK - most important, it resolves the underlying problem.
The only thing to be aware of: now that your mirrors are sticking out, you gotta keep in mind that your bike is actually wider, so watch out when wiggling your way through a traffic jam or navigating close quarters. And, if i dropped the bike, yes, it'll be a new mirror, too.

I tried fitting the black short stem mirrors and the stock 1200c mirrors (slightly longer stem). I can guarantee neither fit my bike (2014 1200c with stock riser and bars).
