Default Suspension recommendations?

2014 Ultra Limited.
I weight about 235 and the wife is 160.
I do about 70% solo riding and 30 2 up.
Tour pack is detachable, which is a 40 some lb difference out back on or off. I do like to run it hard when I'm solo and no passenger.
So, I'm a little confused as to what would work out well, given all the variables.
I don't wanna spend the rent, but I also realize that good suspenders ain't cheap, so I'm open to suggestions.

I have the same bike. I used Progressive components front and rear. Progressive cartridge system in front and 444 on rear. On the rear I went with 13.5" shock (1/2" longer than stock) with the super duty springs. I weigh in at 225 and my wife is around 150. I tried the heavy duty springs first and I did not think that they were heavy enough. The super duty are a bit too heavy solo but perfect two up. I run no preload with the SD springs and almost get the correct sag solo, with the HD springs I had to preload them until the softer portion of the spring was almost collapsed to get near the correct solo loaded sag. Even solo I'll take the increased control and cornering clearance over the slightly more comfortable ride.

The Progressive set-up is not what I'd call plush but the control in corners is excellent. I have no problem throwing the bike hard into corners. The photo below is on the "Dragon" in Tennessee and considering the bikes inherent limitations it hustles through there very nicely.

I also installed an Alloy Art frame stabilizer. Well worth the $120 they cost. No more wallowing over mid corner bumps.

I use the Pro Action Front Fork Kit and Pro Action Street Series shocks.

Any premium shock will be better than stock as long as it is set up right. I had Ohlins on my 11 and now on my 14 have Super shox, I need to adjust with and without passenger.

Any quality shock you buy is going have adjustable rebound and most importantly for you adjustable preload. Which going from 2-up to solo and dropping your tour pack will be the adjustment you need to change the most. Once you get your adjustments figured out for how you like the ride for solo vs 2-up, it’s very easy to swap between the two.

Ohlins, legends, pro action. And the budget friendly Bitubos are all great options.

Agreed with any of the top name brands being a huge improvement over stock... can't really go wrong with any of them.

Personally I did legends front and rears and have zero complaints. Couldn't be happier with them

I haven't taken the time to figure out different settings for different loads but I found a nice "middle of the road" spot to keep them in. At some point I'll get around to dialing it in for different set ups.

Pro Action front and rear for me. What ever you get don't hesitate to "fine" tune to you.

I have base Ohlins on my 07 and progressive cartridges and it rides on rails and so smooth.

I recommend Pro-Action. They will take your specifics (rider weight, passenger weight, style of riding, etc.) and setup a system for your needs.

FWIW - I went with ProAction front and rear.

But I dropped 2" in the back for my short legs.

PA, Ohlins, Progressives, any adjustable after market is good. There are a bazzilion threads on shocks on HD Forums.
