I just mounted a 2009 tour pack on my 14 SGS. I used the factory harness that comes with the air wing luggage rack light and it plugs directly into the tour pack light and everything worked fine. So then I start the bike to take it for a spin and about ten seconds after I start it I lose all of my running lights on the tour pack and the fender. The brake lights still work all around, but no running lights. I repeated this several times and get the same results. All of the lights work fine before the bike is started and I only have this problem when the bike is running. Once I unplug the tour pack lights everything on the fender operates normally. Any idea what's going on? Solutions?
You think the BCM can be flashed to allow for the extra draw?
No. Short of changing to LEDs, the next best solution would probably be to purchase a trailer wiring harness adapter & connect the TP through the adapter. That way the original wiring won't see the TP lighting load, but the TP lights would get the proper on/off signals & its' lighting power from the battery through the trailer harness.
Success! After looking into LED conversions to the tune of over $600, and even contemplating scrapping the whole thing and starting fresh with a 14 tour pack, I finally figured it out. My local dealer helped me as much as they could, so I can't really fault them, but in the end they were of no help. They even went so far as to call a tech at HD HQ and he said that my setup should work without a problem and that it's probably a bad ground somewhere. I had an indy look at it and he agreed that there was too much current draw and that I would have to switch to LED's. Well I figured if TOTAL current draw was the problem, then why does it have to be the TP lights that are converted to LED? So I rode up to my dealer, bought some CD LED's for the fender mounted tail lights for $65 (less than $600), installed them in the parking lot and voila! I now have running and brake lights all around. The bike was confused for a minute, but I turned on the hazards and it self-corrected.
Thank you,Thank you,Thank you.I was having the same problem
Glad I could be of assistance. The only problem with LED's paired with incandescent is that the incandescent bulbs have a very noticeable delay in activating when compared to the LED's. You may also want to look at these LED replacements for the tour pack as well. Less than $15.00. Good luck.
