Angry Rushmore/GPS

2014 HD limited
I finally figured out how to track a route on the infotainment gps, NOW WHAT?
Can I export it to a thumb drive?, can I import it to a laptop and lay it over a street map and then import the new map back into the gps?
Could not find any specific directions in the manual. HELP, HELP, HELP

Hallo,

first of all there is an online help with some help:

http://boombox.harley-davidson.com/premium.html#

Concerning the import and export options I know that you can load routes into the GPS. Problem is that the maps on your computer are probably not the sames as in the infotainment system. So anyway the system has to recalculate a loaded route.
A route is currently limited to 9 waypoints what limits also your options to stick to a certain route. And it is not possible to exclude the recalculation when leaving the route.
From my point of view you can use the system to go from A to B but you cannot specify the exact roads to take from A to B.
I am waiting for appropriate updates before buying a Harley.

Cheers
Ralf

If you're talking about the record function, I've been looking around quite a bit and have not been able to find a way to save it or export it out to USB yet.

...and I think - but I'm not sure - the record function shuts off when you shut the bike down & you have to remember to turn it on when you fire it back up to keep recording.

Ralf,

I don't agree with your statement that you can't specify the exact roads on your route. I rode my bike from western PA to Ocean City, MD in August. I planned the trip in HD Ride Planner. It is true that you cannot exceed 9 waypoints, so I actually planned 7 separate trips to get there and 6 separate trips to get back. I only had one slight glitch on one of the legs getting back. Otherwise, I planned every road and the gps took me on every road that I planned. I made the same trip the year before on a 12 CVO SG that I had. Planned the trip in TYRE and downloaded it to a Garmin Zumo that I had for that bike. I had no waypoint limitation, but I also had a route glitch with that on the way back. Anyway, getting back to the point, you can specify what roads you want to take.

This is correct. When you shut off the bike, the recording you had going is gone, and the function is shut off. You have to manually turn it back on next time you start the bike.

Very true - sometimes.

These things are not 100% accurate & true to the road systems. I have planned routes in HDRP within the area around my home, only to have the 6.5 change those routes when loaded into the system. I made sure the settings in the 6.5 were correct (meaning it was set to "fastest route", that I didn't have it set to avoid certain roads, etc.) in an attempt to align it as close as possible to the HDRP settings. I had less than 9 waypoints. I made sure the waypoints were addresses on the correct side of the road (east or west, north or south). While the 6.5 always got me to the final destination, it would take me in a route that differed from what I had programmed in HDRP. It didn't change all of my routes, but some it would.

I'm far from an expert, but I've used Garmin units in the past with BaseCamp to plan runs for a group for which I served as the head road captain (in western PA, as a matter of fact!). I think one big advantage to a portable Garmin GPS is you actually use the map database within the unit to plan routes as the unit is connected to you computer while using the BaseCamp software. Assuming you have the latest updates installed, there should be few surprises. With a unit permanently installed in the vehicle, route planning is done on a map generated from a database that is separate from that of the one in the GPS. It would seem logical to me that differences between the 2 databases could result in changes when loading routes from one to another.

Even at that, my Garmin units - I still have a 665 - aren't perfect. While a GPS is great, they are not a substitute for possessing & studying a good map.

...thank's for the advice. The one I was interested in would have had that.

If that's the deciding factor on whether or not to buy a 28 thousand dollar Harley....

Stick with your Bimmer, friend.

You will be happier at the end of the day.
