1) What is the purpose of that? Making all points as destinations only to change them to way points (except the 1st and last ones)?
2) Why load it onto the Garmin via the Manual Mode? I use auto and it works well. There a reason manual is btr?

1) If you are riding backroads and creating a route using backroads the Ride Planner will over ride the road you have chosen, (with a more efficient route) even if you are putting in a lot of waypoints. (OneShot showed me this). If you put in destinations it will not over ride. Once you are done you may then go back and change them to waypoints. You also do not have to have as many waypoints once the route is established in Ride Planner.
2) I am not loading it into a Garmin? I am loading into the Bike's navigation system.

Once again, I have spent some time playing with Ride Planner and find it very easy to use.

Very helpful thank you. Can u name Way points do you know?

If I have say 5 way points and then shut the bike off in the middle of a route, the GPS comes back on asking me if I want to continue at way point, 2 or 3 or 4 or........... if they are named, it would be very helpful. ??

RE: Garmin 590 (Hopefully others too.)

I found the answer, YES you can rename a "via" or way point.

1) Load the ride into your GPS.

2) As it loads, you will see the Start location and then your way points. TAP the way point you would like to name.

3) Scroll to the bottom.

4) TAP "Rename Location".

That is how it worked on my Garmin 590. I suspect others will be similar.

Not to revive an old thread... but I was having trouble loading GPX files created by google maps and gps visualizer (as described earlier in this thread). It kept saying NAV full (even after I reset).
So I updated the radio to the latest boom software. While I can easily load GPX files created from the HD Ride Planner, I cannot load the GPX files from google/gps visualizer. It sees the file, but once I select the file from the IMPORT menu, I do not see anything to import.

This seems like more work than mapping out the ride on a piece of paper!

I tried google maps and gps visualizer, couldn't get it to work either. I've gone back to Ride Planner and although I'm still learning it seems to work better for me at least.

I looked at the GPX file in an editor. It's really simple XML. The file from HD ride planner (for the same route) is 3 kb... The file from google maps & gps visualizer is 136 kb.

While neither of those are large, the google maps contains thousands of "trkpt" elements. According to the specs, these are GPS tracking points and are part of the "track segment".

Neither of these segments appear in the HD version - it is much simpler, containing only waypoints. In the advanced options on GPS Visualizer, you can elect to not include track points.

If I were guessing, I'd say the Google Maps is attempting to route you exactly as you planned it on the PC screen. While the HD Ride Planner is just setting up waypoints and will route you between them give how your Nav is setup (Fastest, Shortest, Scenic, etc.). This is most likely why most of the videos suggest creating several waypoints along your route.

Guess I should have tried this out before leaving on a 1200 mile trip, huh?

Yep. The HD system does not use tracks, only waypoints.

I'm trying Google maps and gpsvisualizer as well and cannot get it to import to RidePlanner or the HD onboard GPS at all. It actually locks up the USB connection on the bike after trying to import the file...

I cannot use the HD RidePlanner site because I can't get it to show POIs, so I want to use a product like Google Maps but.....

I always initially create my ride using Google Maps. I can use POI's, look at areas by using the little guy, etc., and once I have finalized my routes I use HD's Ride Planner to generate the routes to be loaded onto the bike.

I also do it this way so I can easily share the routes with friends that are riding with me by sending them an email with links to the Google Maps' routes. Can't do that with Ride Planner.

MilesOfTexas - you CAN share your routes with friends using HD RP - I have done it several times, and they do not need an account to view the routes you have shared. If you are not sure how to do it, let me know and I will take some screen shots and show you where and how... there are some tricks to it as well - nothing is straight forward as they should be... ;-)

One more thing....

One thing to keep in mind as I read through some of these posts - I posted a very long-written explanation in another thread on here somewhere and if I find I will post a link here... but the short is this;

Remember - HD RP and Gmaps just calculate a route based on the fastest route preference - so if you do NOT use WP's to manipulate your route exactly as you want it, when it loads into your Boom GPS unit, it will use the preferences you have set for the GPS (fastest, scenic, twisty, etc.) to calculate your route, which may not match up to the route you thought you had mapped out.
