Installed the HD LED taillight and bullet smoked front turn signals. Really helps the look since half of the bike was already LED with tour pak and daymakers. I don't know why they didn't do the entire bike this way to start with. I am sure it was a marketing angle to get us to spend more money.

That's the correct answer. I feel bad for the CVO Limited/Ultra RG people. They have the LED tail/brake light on the rear fender but the front turn/running lights and rear turn signals are incandescent. What's really bad is when the turn signals are on, the rear tourpak LED turn signal lights look great, but then below that the incandescent turn signals are slow to turn on and off compared to the LED's. And then the LED lights above are red and the incandescent bulbs on the fender are amber.
Looks awful.
I'm assuming some could care less if any of their lights are LED, but for those that do it's a nice chunk of change for H-D or the aftermarket companies. If they installed LED's all the way around there would be very little aftermarket lighting sales due to expected bulb life.
Yes it wasn't cheap. $159 for tail light and $199 for front turn signals. At least I get 15% discount for military. Was a relative easy install as well and no need for equalizer. Like I say , get your kids interested in Harley's and the will have no money left to have another kind of addiction.
I hear you, I have almost 5 bills wrapped up in the turn signals and headlight. But for the brightness and long lifespan I think it's money well spent. When I do get another bike I'll be putting the factory lights back in so the LED's can go on the next one. Unless they change lighting configurations down the road, I see it as almost a one time investment. When I look back at the money I've spent over the years on bulbs from companies like Sylvania and PIAA, I probably didn't really save much. The breaking point was last fall when an aftermarket headlight bulb I installed burned out (at night) after a month.
I bought the 1st generation LED lights from HD back before they called them 'Daymakers' and I have to say while rolling through Death Valley at night - with all three on - it made a helluva difference.
I then replaced all my lights with LED, tail-light, turning signals, and then I got the LED combo speedo/tach. So far in 7 years I have never worried about replacing any bulbs.
Plus - the rear tail-light and turn signals are Super-Bright LED's.
I picked up the 1156 & 1157 Style Bulb at some dealership half a decade ago - and they have never gone bad yet. The tail-light has been a bit of a hit or miss. I finally got something that produced a real nice red color - yet was very bright when I stepped on the brake. Same with the rear turn signals in red. Nice and bright. On the front though the amber lights are not that bright, but they do the job.
I went with Custom Dynamic Led called Bullet Ringz with the Led tri-bar. Was $330 with the Military discount. Was easy to install. I actually went with Streetglide lighting with my Roadking. Bought the fender and the front chrome SG turn signal assy from Ebay. I had to make jumper harnesses to connect to the RK connectory. Now I can strip down my RK for bar hopping, then pop on the windshield and the factory passing lamps and fangs with soft lowers to go on long trips. Soon I will have a detachable tourpak for road trips.

Its on my list of things to do as well. It is frustrating to find everything LED except the taillight and front turns. I think the HD lights offer the easiest "plug-n-play" option. But I could be wrong. I do like some of the after market options that are out there.
