I pulled the foam insert out of mine too. I just use a regular USB thumb drive to have all my music and wound up putting my phone in the trunk connected to the power port to keep it charged and communicate with it via Bluetooth.
So now besides the thumb drive for music I keep a garage door opener in that compartment and put my glasses in there too (in an eyeglass bag). I like that setup better.
Unless it's raining my iPhone 6 is on the right handlebar in a RAM x-grip. Flush USB adapter in the cig lighter and a short black lightning cable to charge the phone if necessary.

I've got the iPhone 6+ as well. What I did was put it in the mesh pocket of the tour pack, with the charging cable going to a USB adapter plugged into the power port in the tour pack. Bluetooth works great, and the phone stays charged.
