Interesting. Did they happened to mentioned what would have caused all these issues? The thing that catches my attention is the carbon on the pistons. Would oil from the crankcase vent tube spitting into the cylinders have caused this?
Most likely correct sir. The first Mod I did on any twin cam I've owned was routing the crank case breather out of the air cleaner. I've drilled and tapped my SE plate but there are so many kits out there, it's easier to do then that.

They really couldn't give me an answer. I'm thinking the rings never did seat good along with the crankcase venting. They did say they think some carbon broke lose and caused the damage.

Well, I think this tilts the scales in favor of installing and external breather on my bike.
just got a call from the dealer my engine may need to be replaced was a lot of metal shavings in the crankcase.Because I did my own maintenance they said they may need to see my receipts which i have.Riding season is just getting started here now no bike.lasted only 17000 miles .
Mines in the shop also for engine knock. 13500 miles. always changed oil at 3000 miles use mobil1 and took oil sample. drain plug full of metal. oil pump ate lots of metal. I cut open filter and its full of metal. no scoring on cylinders or pistons. dealer thinks pistons out of round making noise. it all happened within 150 miles. I believe metal is coming from rod bearing needles flaking. waiting for HD to decide what's next. HD has issues.... too many 2014's knocking at low miles
You never mentioned whether your engine used oil or not but I just assume it didn't. Well then this makes me wonder about the tune your engine had. If there was that much carbon on the pistons in 11,000 miles that caused it to break off you may have been running to rich. Again not sure about oil usage or not just something to think about.
1 more question, was your bike professionally tuned or just a down load or Auto tuned ?
I'll also add that while I had it down, if it were me I'd have them install a set of 28 thous. Cometic Head gaskets which would bring your comp. to 10.3 or 10.4 I believe and add some Andrews 57 cams and get that thing tuned, I guarantee you will see a difference then. 105hp and probably 115 or more on tq.

That is why I buy all my service oils from the dealer till my warranty runs out. They have the records of all my purchases, like every other customer, on their system and can pull up what, when, etc, etc. I switch oils and filters after the warranty period.I know they can't void the warranty with the use of other brands of oils, but I don't have to keep up with receipts that way. FWIW.
Did you see metal on the drain plugs when you did your service? Sounds like a bearing failure somewhere to me.

The bike never used any oil or smoked. The tune was a canned tune on the Fuelpak FP3 that was further auto tuned. I've thought more about cams and looked at my budget and it's just not in the budget to do it. I'm really happy with the way it runs now (well, not right now of course) so I think I'll leave it stock. I appreciate the advice.

After reading your posts, I was gonna suggest that you hold out for a complete new engine.
They'll probably send the motor back to the MOCO so that they can there it down there, would be my guess.
I've been seeing posts on other forums regarding knocking engines on '14's too. Sounds like they tried to save a few cents per engine by cheaping-out on some parts and ended up costing themselves bigtime.
They just never seem to learn, do they? I've heard that the definition of an idiot is someone who keeps doing the same thing over and over, but expects a different outcome every time. That seems to apply to the MOCO perfectly.
