"Did you TRY Jim Palmer at Kutter HD."

They won't sell an ESP on a bike registered in Oregon, California, or Florida. But for any other state...I think Jim has the best prices by far.

"Extended warranties are for people who are living from pay check to pay check with out any wiggle room."

I disagree. I think people who put lots of miles on the bike probably make out ok as well. The odds of a serious problem go up significantly when putting upwards of 15K a year...and I expect to put nearly 100,000 miles on over the next 5 years or so.

I'm in talks for a new bike now and not only want the ESP...but I'm going to get a pre-paid service as well. All scheduled services for 3 years for $1500. That is obviously not going to be worth it for anyone who does their own services...but at $400 or so per service, I'll break even on the 15K service and that will be the first year. I'll have 2 more years of services for free.

If you have the dough to fix the bike if it breaks, e.g., several grand for an engine, etc., and you only ride 5K/year, then it might make sense to blow off the extended warranty.

It's all probabilities...and a bit about luck, good and bad.

And that's why I got the extended warranty. We put 20k miles a year on our bike, we plan on keeping it for at least the seven years. That's 140k miles, think I might use the warranty? Also my dealer loves warranty work, says it payes better!

if you look past the obvious poke that was given, it does make sense to put a little money in an account to cover any major repair issues. at the end of 2 years, say you put 200 bucks away every month in this account, you are sitting on 4800 bucks. if you keep going for the life of the bike, you would have enough to cover yourself if you need a repair.

Now the issue is, I got this money sitting here and I sure could use some more chrome on the Harley. lol

Underwriters on extended warranties always win even if there is a claim.

Default Extended Warranty W/High Miles

Wow, 20K a year for seven years is really pounding out the miles. Thats dedication to the sport. Over that distance one concern I would have is does the warranty cover normal wear & tear? Not knowing the contract language, I would assume it does not. Throw a rod or major transmission failure, you might be covered. Burn a little oil, need a new clutch, time for a new drive belt - probably not covered. I think if a guy buys some peace of mind and understands what he's getting in the contract, they might be the right thing for you.

I've put almost 30k on mine in 2 years and I ride hard. The extended warranty has paid for quite a few things, expensive repairs and I'm out $150 for deductibles.

I did not buy the extended warranty, two weeks after I made the decision not to buy and after my factory warranty expired....I get a nail in my rear tire. Now I have $365 invested that would have been covered by the tire and wheel coverage. I will keep track of repairs for the next five years to see how I come out.

First flat since 1989, hope it's my last. Oh well

BOTTOM LINE

Is it worth it? = YES - if YOU think so. NO if YOU don't. It's that simple.

For me it's yes. I ride between 10k and 14k each year and I still work 40 hours. I'm 71 and my job is teetering on the verge of collapse. If something goes bad in the next 7 years, I'm covered. So far I haven't lost money on any of the EXP's I've had. You can transfer it over to a new bike also, which I've done.

Naturally mechanically inclined riders will tell you it's a waste of money and that's true - for them, but if you are all thumbs and ride a lot, it's a good idea.

No one is saying that dealers don't make money on them. Of course they do. Why sell something you don't make money on?

Who said put away $200 dollars a month??? Are you crazy? Who has an extra $200/month = Trump??

Good luck on whatever YOU decide.
