I have the HD tie downs that bolt to the trees, I would not tie to the fork legs.
Kickstand UP. Pull in to the suspension a bit.
Straps are cheaper than paint. I use 7 to tie my bike down. I've towed 2 touring bikes in my 7x14 thousands of miles, never had one move.
I also have a near 28 year career with a CDL, I'm not an amateur.
I used to tie down by compressing forks,,with my dirt bikes. But seals are a pain to replace. And if you hit some decent bumps, then what do the straps do,,,,? LOOSEN up a little while it bounces... unless you compress alot, then you're putting undo stress on fork components IMHO.

This is why I was wondering about the carpeted block under the frame, pull the tie down tight until the frame contacts the block, one click more and then there SHOULD be no movement, block holding it from compressing and straps holding it from loosening...
Both bikes have the HD tie down brackets. I have a Harbor Freight wheel chock bolted to my trailer. I screw in 3/8" eye bolts into the spare mounting holes at the passenger peg mounts. Tie down 4 corners ................. It doesn't get any better or easier.
Picked up the recommended brackets mentioned earlier in the thread. $63 OTD and a breeze to install. Just use your original hardware and acorn nuts and toss the screws that come in the kit, they look like ****. THANKS to Wharf Rat...
I always tie my TK down by going around the forks and over the axle on each side so it doesn't compress the forks. Holds very stable. I also insist on using straps with clips on the hooks so in case a strap loosens it won't come unhooked (scary!).
So, in my search for clip-type hooks I found this motorcycle tie down kit from Discount Ramps with 4 straps and 2 soft loops link
I use these LOADALL straps in my trailer when hauling my bike and they are by far the best and quickest tie down straps I have ever used. I haul 4 bikes in my 8.5x20 homesteader trailer and use these on all 4 bikes. I HIGHLY recommend! http://loadall.com/collections/tie-downs
