And, could be that HD is looking at changes that we make to their bikes, and try to incorporate improvements into the new models. You mentioned the stereo, hardly anyone was satisfied with the older stereos, HD is making theirs better. Not great, but better. I've gone with aftermarket exhaust on my bikes, HD is really constrained by the government on this one, but they know their customers want their Harley to sound like a Harley. And, yeah, maybe the older we get, the more we just like to ride, and not tinker so much. 58 this year, just getting started.

I'm pushing 65 real close now... my last 3 HD's, I did the full big bore, cams, heads, chrome wheels... etc. When I got my 14 SGS 2 yrs ago, I quickly did the Stage 1 stuff then started looking at a 107 Kit, heads & all the rest I usually do. After getting all the prices & even if I do the work like normal....
Well I decided I didn't need that any more ... it is still stock & has a just the Stage 1 kit in it.

I'm 67 and agree with the OP on the OEM exhaust sound except I don't get the changes in exhaust noise between 5 and 6 gear range. Keep having to look down to see what gear I'm in. With more rumble of the aftermarket exhaust, I know when I'm in 5th or 6th. As far as the Boom Box goes it's OK but I was amazed how much better it sounds with ear plugs in and the volume up at speed. The ear plugs seem to get rid of the wind noise without distorting the sound from the speakers. Your mileage may vary .
