Randy and I were told by the tech that it was ok to ride with a broken pump, BUT, the manual says "shut engine off and take it too authorized dealer". Both bikes run fine if you dont mind a hot crotch. There is that warranty issue so going to trailer mine 200 miles to the dealer. More to come.
That happened to me on my 15 Limited with about 11,300 miles on it last week. Was on vacation from SoCal and visiting Tahoe. Limped into Carson City Harley (Battle Born?). They have new ownership and they are really trying hard to improve on the old dealership. They worked hard and found out is was the coolant pump that was out. Took a long time, but repaired under warranty. Ran fine the rest of the trip, including 94 degree temps at 80 mph on the way home two up and fully loaded.
My buddy and I both have 2106 Ultra Limited and while we were on our way to DC both bikes had water pump failures. My bike has 2000 miles and his has 4000 miles on them. No one on the east coast had pumps so we trailered back to mid-west and had the pumps replaced and new thermostats. After about 200 miles both bikes had the engine lite and temp lights come on again. Fans would not work. Going back to dealers we bought the bikes from and find out what is going on.
Just upgraded to a 2016 Limited, May 8th. The Wednesday after we got back from DC, same thing, CHK Engine Lite and Water Temp light came on after a short ride to work, less than 2k miles on bike. Mine has been sitting at the Dealer for two weeks waiting on a water pump. Water pumps were backordered until 7 Jun, now pushed back till 17 Jun.

Sounds like yet another instance of cheap Chinese-made-junk parts crappin' out.
It takes a while to get the parts all the way from China to the US via container ship.
Hope they get your bike fixed before fall!
I was browsing around a Toyota showroom a few days ago and noticed that the window sticker said that the vehicle was built using 100% Japanese-made parts. Hmmmmm...

Just got back from a road trip. Two fellow riders, one on a '14 CVO Ltd and the other on a '15 Tri Glide, had their check engine and temperature lights come on in different incidents, both about 350 miles from home.
The Tri-Glide went out, and the coolant level was low. We topped off the coolant level, the lights went out, and we started out. However, the lights came back on 10 miles later. The manual, it says don't run it with the lights on, so we had it towed.
The CVO also went out with both the check engine and high temp lights showing, while following the Tri-Glide to the dealership on the tow truck. The coolant level was not down. So, again following the manual, it was also towed.
Both were towed to the same dealership. The CVO was diagnosed with a bad pump, and as mentioned in an earlier post, the pumps are on back order and not available. The Tri-Glide had a bad valve that wasn't routing coolant to the radiators, hence it got hot, boiled off, and threw the check engine and high temp lights after just a short distance. The dealer did not have a replacement valve in inventory.
In both cases, after looking at the bikes, the techs said the bikes would be safe to ride home. They said to avoid extended idling, and to shut off if stuck in traffic, but otherwise, just to ride reasonably. Highway speeds weren't an issue.
We did that for about 350 miles, and got home with no further issues. They documented their recommendations in writing and gave it to both owners. They are into their local dealerships now for followup work.
I had my pump go out on my 14 Limited in March while at Bike Week. Took it to Rossmeyers to get it fixed and they had to replace it twice. The first pump out of the box didn't work second one was the charm. The service rep told me they had never had this happen.

Just one more "Professional Liar". That guy should go into politics.
harley using cheap Chinese parts is what the real problem is. they should give everyone an extended five year warrenty on the cooling systems defects.
I do believe that they should do something with all the failures , who' knows how long the replacement will last, mine lasted till a little over 25,000, and the same week the warrant expired , lucky that the dealer's service manager called and got mine warranted. It's probably close to a $1000.00 job, parts and labor, give or take a few hundred
