Yes, the GPS system on these bikes is terrible for "on the fly" navigation. Terrible. If you use ride planner first, which can be tricky in it's own right, and pre-load your exact trip, then it is not bad. But it doesn't leave you with a whole lot of flexibility.
I don't even think a software update will help. The computer seems to be SLOWWWWW on these bikes. Adding more features would likely just slow it down more.
It really is a shame. I haven't brought myself to handlebar mount a GPS unit though. It's almost embarrassing to have an external GPS mounted to your $30,000 touring bike that came with built-in GPS...
And those are just the ones you started about the GPS. It doesn't include your other gripes about the bike......
O.K. dude, if you try to chastise me for having an opinion about something then have the courtesy to do it correctly. The second thread you listed is not even mine. Somebody else started that one. And find one single sentence in all of my threads where I bitched about my bike. I always praised HD for having designed such a great touring bike. Believe me, if I wouldn't like my SGS, I would have sold it by now. BTW, find me one post of mine, where I criticized a person for posting an opinion I am in a disagreement with. If you like you POS-GPS than more power to you.
That Indian Dealership has only been there 2 years & prior to that it was the H-D Dealership that is listed in your GPS. H-D needs to upgrade it's dealership listings eliminating the ones that no longer exist. So the GPS actually took you to the right location.
Thanks for clearing that up. Later on it dawned on me as well, it may have something to do with that. You are right. HD should and could have made such a correction by now with a free upgrade. Yes, and I was advised how to re-arrange the setting in POI to indicate the distances and directions of the destinations you are searching for. It all boils down to "user- friendliness" and I stick to my opinion that this unit is anything, but that.
I have never used Ride Planner. Put the address in and go.. Hotel, what ever. Easy to change on the go too. I find the Infotainment to be very satisfactory. I've got a 60,000.00 King Ranch and it has its glitch's also.
Any POI updates, I'm assuming including HD dealerships, are done during map updates. These are not done during the periodic infotainment updates. Most people on here probably aren't running the most recent map.

There isn't a recent map available. Unless 2-3 years ago is considered recent.

Well, technically 2014 Q2 is the most recent. I have a 2015 SGS and it is running a 2013 Q2. So I'm guessing most people aren't even running the update from 2014 unless they paid the $150. I even called HD customer service to see if I could get the 2014 since I bought a 2015. They said, too bad so sad, pay the $150. Needless to say I wasn't a happy camper.
I have a 14 Ultra (purchased in Sept 13) - constant user of the Boom system. The first winter I had the bike, I spent a bit of time in the garage learning the features. For me, this was a big help.
I use ride planner and plan most of my trips - then load them to the bike. I also have a number of songs that are on a flash drive. Plus (and don't tell my wife), my phone is connected just in case I have to take that all so important call). I ignore most of the call - but, on occasion, I have to take one.
I have to say that I am one the likes the system - and when I discover something that might not work the way I expect it to, I look for ways to meet my needs - those ways including coming here and talking to folks like you that may be able to provide some options.
Before the boom, I have a Garmin 665 on my 2011. I would not exchange my boom for the 665. By the way, I have some friends that have Wings and the included Nav system - they have Garmins mounted on their bars.
