That's exactly what I've done.

I took my 2004 fairing off so many times, I could do in in the dark - the newer models are just as easy - as stated, take the passing lamps off is a breeze - I leave the middle windshield bolt in 'loose' and take all the others out - covering the fender is the best advice - enjoy

The stock street glide mirrors install very easily as per the instruction sheet that is included. Once you have the outer fairing off, you will see the hole locate marks embossed into the inner fairing. If by chance you are planning to install the billet style mirrors, be advised that the instructions and the parts included don't quite jive...
They fit just fine, but there is a mislabled part included that will leave you scratching your head.
I am installing the street glide fairing mirrors, so there are marks on the inside, cool. Thanks for the input.

I just installed the XM module on my bike last week. It was a breeze to remove the outer fairing and installing the unit. And I am not mechanically inclined by no means.

If your installing the HD brand street glide mirrors you may want to take a look at the Harley parts website for that item. Some good review tips included for those on installation. It seemed a common complaint was some extra drilling out to elongate the holes for a good flat mounting to the fairing surface was neccesary.

I was looking at replacing mine with the chrome ones.

Good luck.

I just place a pair of old wool socks over the spots, no scratches

Now that you have done this - dont you just laugh at those that pay HD $100 an hour to do it.
Suggestion - on those screw/bolt on the fairing - of course dont Over torque - check every so often, I lost one after I had the fairing off because I did not check
