all great advice, thanks for all the input. I'm a big fan of just hitting the road and taking it as it comes. I will try a 300+ mile ride first since my sister just moved to Midland. That will be a good test ride from Austin. From that ride I will decide if I want to make a reservation and stop in Van horn which is 450 miles from Austin for my ride to Safford AZ. That will then leave me only 360 miles from Safford. Probably a good plan! I'm thinking I could probably go further but why, right. Further just puts me closer to the border later in the day and that just doesn't make sense. After all I really just want to enjoy the ride, as others have said. I typically pack light and have a small duffle bag that will fit in the tour pak so not too concerned about that. Really looking forward to hitting the road, wish it wasn't 2 months away!

Something to think about. I've alway considered saddle bags and the tour pak as prime storage space and reserved for expensive and/or motorcycle specific gear. I don't need some dirt bag stealing my $500 helmet or jacket while I'm eating lunch on the road because my damn underwear and T-Shirts we're taking up space. Pretty much Walmart replaceable stuff goes on the luggage rack.
