Default most cost effective way to take luggage?

i am picking up my new bike on thursday and need to figure out what is the most cost effective way to take luggage?

option 1 tour pack ~ $1500 when all said and done
option 2 sissy bar with rack and bags ~ $1000 and not water proof
option 3 sissy bar no rack and forward facing bag $700 and still not water proof

what other options are out there? oh i did find something called bikers friend bags but i do not care for not fully secured end caps.

I wanted a cost effective way to travel on my Dyna, so I have put a lot of miles on option 3 with my FLD. Including rain.

This is a T-Bags Route 66 Roller bag. The material is pretty water resistant, but it has a rain fly that adds another layer of protection. Great bag. I've had no major problems with it... Except that it doesn't fit on the back seat of my new Ultra Classic, hence I have it for sale.

Finding a second hand sissy bar set up is pretty painless. Search the "for sale" section here, set up eBay alerts, ask around your local HOG chapter. Or buy new from boardtracker or surdyke which seem to be the cheapest places for new HD parts.

Which bike are you riding?

Wife and I have an Ultra - 2 saddlebags and trunk. What we do is - regardless of how long we are gone (over 3 days), we pack for three days. Do laundry every 3rd day.
Doing so really limits what we take

The question is how much do you really need to carry with you and for how long. The poster above me has it right. 3 days clothing. which i could fit into one saddle bag on my bike as well as rain gear and riding gear. Other bag for tools and whatever else. If your planning to camp as you go instead of hotel it then more storage would be nice.

Tour pack the less crap you have to strap on the better.

On a Road Glide now but use the same exact rack and bag that was on my Road King. Wife and I have talked it over and over, we like this set up cause I can slip the bag off the sissy bar and go to the room, once in the room we live out of the bag.

Sometimes we have a base camp we ride out of for a few days, we often look at each other in amazement at how much stuff fits in that bag once its spread out all over the room. It also has a rain cover.

When we shed layers they go under the spider. works for us.

Here is a picture, back when I had the 2005 RoadKing...camping out and carried EVERYTHING...Tent, bag, camping gear, ice with water and food, etc. Not many stores and didn't have to even hit a store.

LOL...Poor girl was seriously LOADED but I had a great time. This was at Lee Ferry on the Colorado River in Arizona.

Nothing like camping off an FL...

Signature picture is the same route years later on the Limited, same amount of junk, just more places to put it.
