Default Header Question

If I just replace my header (FM?) and leave the air and exhaust stock for now do I need a retune ? Not really wanting to do all of the Big 3 at once... just want to reduce the heat for the summer. Thanks.

The stock mufflers are more free flowing than you think. No cat in your new headpipe will increase air flow and lean the poor bike out even more. I bit the bullet and just got it over with. Big sucker, de-catted headpipe and a FP3. I kept the stock mufflers so I can hear the radio. Bike is considerably louder with no cat and runs a lot stronger and cooler. Just do it man, wallet will take a hit but you'll be glad you did it. FP3 was $400, headpipe on ebay $125, and sucker around $150.

The ECM will automatically adjust for the new headpipe. The only time you need to change the map/flash/retune is when you change BOTH the A/C and headpipe.

You would be better served to save your money and do the full stage 1 all at once. Running the bike stock is only going to produce some heat, and there are guys running their bikes stock with 1000's of miles on them.

Remember, you have an engine running that is between your legs, there will be heat!!

Just jump into the Stage 1...

I will say that if you go with an FP3, you may run into O2 sensor cross talk on a decatted stock pipe...I just went with a Fuel Moto SS Jackpot header.

Just a thought, you could put on a set of VIEDS. They show up in the classifieds here from time to time very reasonable. Running it a bit richer will also help with the heat. I ran a set with just slip ons before I went with a complete stage 1 and was happy with the results. I think you'd be very happy with the FM header. I got their ceramic jackpot header and love it.

I did my stage I the opposite order you want to go....

I did air cleaner and slip-ons, then later did the FuelMoto 2-1-2 head pipe. I talked w/Fuelmoto about getting a tune for my PowerVison, for the A/C & Slip-ons. I mentioned that in about 6 months, I would be adding their head pipe and need a new tune.
They told me the CAT does not restrict as much as some believe. He said the tune would be the same for Stage I with or without CAT...

Based on that, you should be fine... but we all know any OEM bike (lean EPA tune) will run better with a new tune...

On my wife's 13 street glide we put on Vance and Hines dresser duals with supertrap mufflers. Didn't change the air cleaner and bike has been like that since 13 and no issue at all. The bike now has 14,xxx and not a problem, and cooler without the stock cat.

If you want to do it right once then do all 3 and get it properly tuned on a dyno by a good tuner and you will be happy.

It you go with the so called true dual maybe. With a good 2-1-2 type header no you will not lean it out. Contrary to what many think true dual are not a good option on a Harley and it needs to be tune to get it even close to right.
Take a look at something like Fuel Moto 2-1-2 header.
