The dealer charges a buck each for the o rings. Pick up a box at Lowe's or Home depot in the plumbing area. Snug em up with your ratchet, but don't overtighten.
There is a guy on ebay that sells the 'o' rings for cheap. I just got an order from him for 100 for 5 bucks and they are the right ones.
Also 28.5 nm is 21 lb/ft of torque, and I think the range is 14-21 lb/ft. So in real world terms that'd be snug but not tight! You're not trying to fasten two parts together that want to fly apart. You just want a good seal and snug enough that the plug won't fall out. Just beyond finger tight . . . probably works just fine.
14 ft-lbs is ALL I ever do. Most all other torque specs on the HD I put to the middle but not the drain bolts.
THe thread sealant is a pain in the *** to find!!! THey have yellow plumbers sealant at Lowes...is that the same thing?? AutoZone they bring me right to the blue loctite and say use that....

You don't need the sealant, just a new oring and your good, I never use anything but a new oring. But if you insist get this at Lowes, RectorSeal T Plus Thread Sealant, and only a "thin" film on the threads..
Features: Condition:100% Brand New

Here is a 100-pack of Oil Drain Plug O-Rings for your Harley-Davidson. These O-Rings are used on the Engine, Primary, and Transmission Drain Plugs of the more recent Twin-Cam bikes.
These O-Rings are made from Buna-N and meet the same specs as the OEM part. They are identical to Harley-Davidson OEM ref 11105."
So the o-ring is described as a Harley 11105 VITON Oring yet in the description it mentions they are made out of Buna-N.
Not a big deal except for the 250 degree temp range capability difference of the 2 different materials. Can you tell by looking at them?
I replace all drain plug orings at changes. No thread sealant ever. To much risk of a runaway gob of it loose in the engine to plug something up. Just a drop or so of engine oil on threads and installed oring works well. No oring damage has ever been noted at next change. Don't overtighen is crusial.
